Filling my Garage

ive not even moved house yet but ive already started to fill my garage with stuff!

so far ive managed to aquire -

A pillar drill for £50
A Clarke 170T welder for free
A big hefty vice
A load of marking out and measuring gear

My Fiances school is moving sites and due to the nature of design and technology these days they are moving away from the traditional metal and woodwork and more towards product design so they are getting rid of some kit, more iritating is she only mentioned it in passing "i got offered some stuff by the DT department today but I said you wouldnt be interested...." (so shes had to go back and grovel!)

its a shame I haven't got the space (and a three phase supply) as I can get a lathe and a Mill for less than a £100 for the pair!

now ive got to find a workbench and some racking (might just get that from ebay), paint the floor, sort out some lighting, make the door locks more secure and we are ready to go

Try and blag a woodwork bench, I got mine from a closing down school years ago, they had been instructed to burn it as it had a loose door hinge! I (we) had to drag it off the bonfire before it was lit, nice guys, actually turned their backs so they couldn't see it walking onto my pickup. No good for welding etc but for heavy tool storage and general metal bashing it is excellent due to its tremendous weight. I have fitted a huge metal working vice on one end and also find the chippy's vice useful for soft or large objects. Best £10 back hander I've ever spent  I later found out that all the lathes etc. got smashed up and sold for scrap. I did try to buy a lathe but was told it was "Impossible due to not being a system in place to sell individual items" Madness! Everything was in new condition as it had been a Special school and the equipment was barely used due to safety.

just had a look through the stuff that came back in the boot of SHMBO's car yesterday...

- about 10 pairs of various dividers, calipers etc.
- box of BSW taps and dies
- box of BA taps and dies
- box of metric taps and dies
- various V blocks
- flat measuring plate
- height guage
- various files
- ball pein hammer
- centre punch
- various engineering squares.
- a couple of old wood surface planes which were too good to chuck out..... just in case i buy a morgan..

apparently the welder ' doesn't work' but it worth a shot, apparently it hasn't worked for 2 years but they have kept it so it cant be a difficult fix.

currently I am negotiating on a workbench as well :)

If the welder is a Clarke, there is a fair chance you can get any parts you need for it. Provided it is not something expensive that's gone like a transformer, it's proabably worth fixing.

It's a shame what gets thrown out by companies these days. In my own professional capacity, I have been involved in organising similar activities to bin/skip electronic equipment. I can sympathise that the logistics cost of managing selling off or even giving away such equipment very often far outweighs the cost of disposal, so that's why it gets skipped.

I haven't collected a great deal of metal working equipment for my old P6 to date but I can say that the one very good thing to have is a workbench and big hefty vice. Good luck setting up your new garage - will give you somewhere to hide when you get married :D .

It may be worth finding out what make/model of mill & lathe they are selling for £100. You just might be able to convert them to single phase (e.g. by replacing their motors with single phase ones??).
