EXPANSION TANK (SD1/BL) URGENTLY REQUIRED...!!!

Hello to one and all, can somebody out there please help me...?!?!?!

My Series 2 P6 V8 needs a bit of help in the cooling department...! As you all know those good folks at Rover didn't think to fit an expansion tank (unbelievable!!!) to the 3500 P6 when it was new so I need to retro-fit an SD1 (or similar BL part) item to aid its cooling system...

If anybody has one knocking about that they are willing to sell please do let me know...

All the very best and huge thanks in advance...!!!

I have always prefered the see through ones so that you can see where the level is.

The SD1 type is similar to the Austin Maxi type andabout the same size.

I've just been looking at those MGB and Dolomite tanks that Stan found on eBay and the hose seems to be near the top of the tank which seems odd.

So, how do they work then? My logic suggests the hose to the radiator should be at the bottom of the tank so that when you fill the tank it drains into the radiator.

The pipe may well continue internally down to the bottom of the tank, if it doesn't as you say it wouldn't be a lot of good, the pipe needs to be below the coolant level to be able to draw it back to the rad.

I would take a trip to my local breakers and just find the first one that looked like it would do the job. A lot of moderns seem to have more than one pipe into the tank, but you should be able to find something suitable.

Hi all.
On a recent trip to the Triumph resto show at Stoneleigh,I found what I have long been looking for!!!! :) ,
A bargain at a quid!! :D
And what it seems you are looking for as well!

An as new, poss nos white expansion tank with 2 feeds,1 at the bottom that goes to the rad,and the one at the top which is the pressure overflow.
Why they are so hard to find I dont know, but its poss that they split easy if overpressurised!

Hate to ask, but is it high enough in that position? Doesn't the water level mark need to be at least as high as the top of the radiator?
Spurred on by this thread, I fitted one the same (found in the back of my garage!) to my 2000TC yesterday. Using a spirit level, I found that the expansion tank needed to be towards the back of the engine bay for it to be high enough while allowing the bonnet to close. So I fitted it on the passenger side near the steering relay. Not finding long enough tubing, I haven't plumbed it in yet so won't know if my theory is correct for a day or two...

The height relative to the rad doesn't really matter within reason, the rad forces the coolant to the expansion tank as required, and then sucks it back as the engine cools, and it will do both whether the expansion tank is just above or below the rad. The only thing that would be more difficult, but even then only slightly, would be bleeding it in the first place, but if the rad is topped up properly first then any air will just be forced to bleed out into the air gap at the top of the expansion tank.

Ah, I see what you mean. I was thinking of it as a sealed system that has to be topped up through the expansion tank.
I'm still not convinced that it's good practice to have the tank lower than the top of the radiator, but probably only because it doesn't feel right and isn't something I can remember seeing on any other car.
