Electrics only works if Lights are on

Hi,

While working on my Rover P6 3500 series 2 I was figuring out how the electrics works, and I noticed that my dash lights don't work even so non of the warning lights except for the turn signals.

Here it comes, I noticed that the wipers only work when the lights are on, same story for the heatermotor

The 2 knobs at the side of the dash (dimmer for the dashlights and reset of tripcounter) are frozen, does this interfear with the problem stated above?

Hi, I would be checking the loom for damage. Either physical like a cut or abrasion, or burnt from a shorted cable within the bundle. There's obviously a cross connection somewhere. Disconnect the battery while you're doing or you could end up making it worse. Also check the connections on the ignition sw and lighting switch,there aren't many places battery and ignition meet.

Edit: I've just thought that a little used and troublesome item is the hazard switch, try working it in and out and see if that cleans up the contacts.

I would be checking for works carried out by previous owners.

I had so many problems with my car when I got it, I called him, "Sparky!"

What additions have been made to it/ e.g. radio, electronic ignition etc, and check the fuse box to see if it shows any signs of melting - they do melt sometimes
