Custom Anti Roll Bar- Cheap opportunity!

Ok everyone, I finally had a response from Coilsprings today.
"Jim, I apologise for not replying sooner. The delay has been caused by concerns re suitability of 735A51 for this application.Although I can obtain it, I need to be certain it will do what was previously done by EN45/ EN48A material.I do not want to take your money until I am 100% convinced.I will be in touch shortly."

So hopefully he'll be in touch shortly with good news :)
Catboy, no worries. You're car is shaping up to be very nice by the way!
Jim

Front suspension rebuilt, waiting patiently.

Meanwhile, only needs painting, new exhaust, new carpet, interior cleaning and refitting etc.etc.etc.........

Thanks Jim
Jim.

That's some in depth info there Ron, good bedtime reading.
I've had a reply from Coilsprings after giving the specifications talked about. 25mm diameter round bar, 14cm length hex ends (19mm diameter).

Ok, for us to obtain the material, have the ends formed, heat treat, shot peen and deliver, prices as below

1 off £150.+vat

5 off £110+vat/ bar

10 off £95+vat/bar. 4/5 working weeks.

So if there were some other parties interested each bar could be had for as little as £114 delivered inc VAT.
Any takers??
They have not confirmed what material it would be made from for these prices, but i'm awaiting an answer. Most likely Chrome Vandadium?
Jim

Hello Jim
I need to cancel my "bar" order .Sorry , nothing you did wrong .
Ive managed to score a new bar off Mal Clark from " Bygone Auto's " here in NZ . He has that orange P6 monster that has set the race tracks alive down here and had reviews on this forum .
He's a P6 guru and knows how to purge power and performance out of Sollihull steel .
I was having a driveby chat with him about an oil pump upgrade kit for mine and I happened to mention anti roll bars from the UK and was getting one down .
Mal has had a few bars made up for the local P6 boys and his off-the-shelf price is hard to beat .
He did tell me what steel it was made from but I forgot by the time I got it home , as I had other things crashing about my head . It sounded posh whatever it was and he has done all the on car testing .
Thanks for doing all the hard yards Jim , Im sure my withdrawal wont upset your quota . At least you got me thinking about "body roll".
I will let the Forum know how my new bar pans out after fitting and going through a few roundabouts at pace !!
regards
Gerald

No worries Gerald, very understandable.
It's probably chrome vanadium of some grade? Love that orange racer, sounds like a very good guy to be acquainted with!
Do let us know it's performance once fitted, it will be interesting to see photos/know what measurements he went with too :D
Jim

Hello Jim
Ive only just got back from a spin in her with the new bar fitted .Just a few tight corners around my local country roads , so I could let her loose .
Wonderful response . The wallow has gone .
Now I need a set of recaro seats to hold me in !!
Not sure what the bar is made off ,heat treated spring steel if I recall .Slightly larger diameter round bar with hex ends > fits perfectly .
Im more than happy with the result , and am now wondering why I didnt do it before ???
Have fun with your new bar !!
Gerald

Gerald that's really good news!
Have you got standard shocks/springs? The uprated bar has been the only change from stock suspension?
I've just tried the Coilsprings webpage and they seem to have a problem currently, I don't know if that's related to the lack of haste or not..
However searching google I did find another very similar firm in Sheffield called Springcoil Ltd so I might send the same requirements their way and see if we can have a good backup plan!
Jim

Hello Jim
Mostly stock standard up front .
I replaced the shocks a few years back with Monroes , but nothing special . Just a pair on a par with the old factory ones , but with improved 21st C technology .It was noticeable though as my factory shocks needed retiring after 40yrs of use .
Im very impressed with the transformation from the new " bar " though .
The P6 was always a wallower from the day it came out of Solihull .
Every P6 should have one - such a modest cost for the result .
A no brainer to fit for a guy like me with ten thumbs .
Gerald

Hi Jim I must confess to following a similar path to Gerald and have purchased a By'Gone auto's ARB as well, should be here Monday or Tuesday of next week. I may still want your custom bar depending on what the freight looks like out of the UK to NZ.

The opportunity of having a local bar was a little to good to pass up on, Talking to Mal from By'Gone auto"s he said he had probably 100 of these bars fabricated up over time, the one I purchased was the last one in his current stock.

A must do recommendation he also passed on was that the bar clamp bolts must be retightened up after about 100 KM's of use.

As I say I am still interested in your bar once perfected by who ever it turns out to be made by as I may be buying a P6BS sometime in the future or if that does not eventuate I am certain I can pass onto to others at the cost I will have bought it at.

I shall be more than happy to review the By"Gone ARB and when the time comes a UK ARB.

Graeme Im not sure my PM's went through to you - I got a little befuddled with the process .You should have ended up with three pm's after I fiddled around .
Anyway I happened to ring Mal at bygone last night and he told me the bar was on its way to you , so I relaxed in that the message got through .
Crappy day up here in Auckland so I dropped the engine sump and cleaned/scraped 40yrs of gunk out of the bottom .
Hopefully Ive eliminated my pesky sump leak in the process . Long time spent on my back trying to get the two bolts under the cross member .
I found a 40x5mm chrome bolt in the sump . Who put that there ? !! A gold coin would have been nice .
Looking forward to a southern report on your " bar "

Yes a gold coin or pieces of eight would be great  a bit scary to find a chrome bolt that is not of Rover assembly in the sump.

Your PM's managed to NOT make it  lost in the internet ether :?
Managed to have 2 good conversations with Mal obviously a top chap.
I am hoping that it may turn up tomorrow but if not then Monday or Tuesday, if tomorrow I might get really keen and install it straight away.

Have just returned from the CHCH Vintage swap meet (largest in the southern hemisphere) must have been over 1000 sites, will make a post in the lounge re my day.

Graeme

Jim,

I have had time to consider one of these and would love to get one if I can. I will try to check in with a commit-to-buy in due course, as it is a funds permitting kind of thing given shipping to Norway would be high. I assume you'll make it known also if the current order tally is near to a price-change limit?

Tor

No worries Graeme. The less things that need to be shipped that distance the better really anyway..
Tor, IIRC there was to be no more savings per bar after 15 units for which there is still enough takers I think.
I admit I'm feeling a little impatient about this, but in truth I've got plenty to do on my car until it will be back on the road anyway.
This all started when I enquired about lowering springs, which I don't have yet either...
Just want to make sure we can all benefit sooner rather than later! :D
Jim

Package arrive today from By'Gone Autos (thanks Mal), unfortunately due to a mis-delivery too late in the day for me to want to fit it today as the rain seems to have arrived grrr courier got it wrong again.
Any way here are the pics of the bygone ARB, you will note the smooth transitions from Hex to bar, no stress risers here or sharp transitions also the end detail re chamfering.

Graeme

I'm very pleased with my uprated ARB, which came from UK supplier Classeparts. Not cheap, granted, but it transformed the driving feel of my car (albeit in conjunction with some other mods). Why not purchase from Alan, in the UK, rather than importing all the way from the opposite side of the world?
