chassis number

Got this email:

" have bought a 1970 rover 3500 p6 and have a bit of a problem, i have found one chassis number on the passanger side wing ( under bonnet ) but can not find any other numbers , i have been told there is another vin plate on the car or stamped number but as off now i still cant find it."

Any advice?

The early p6's had a small metal plate stamped with the chassis number spot welded to the n/s inner wing.
About 1971 on the S2's they changed to having the number stamped into both sides of the inner wing!
Occasionally, you can get either or both on an early S2.
The only other number I know of is in the boot,it is on a ssmall screw on plate !
Location is between the n/s wing and body mounted boot catch under the carpet on the edge facing up at you, could be hidden by the body mounted boot seal!!
This is what I think is referred to as a body in white number??
Sure somewone will know for sure exactly what it is for!!

My early series 2 (April '71) only has the one chassis number plate on the near side inner wing. A very small plate only just big enough to put the chassis number on. I usually have to point it out to the MOT man, because he can't find it!

For those who's small chassis number plate has gone missing,it is dead easy to make one up,close to original spec! and plug weld it on!
Also this is not actually needed for the mot,so if your mot station fail you on it,tell them to look up the rule about pre 1980 cars and chassis number display!!

Series 2 generally also have the number stamped at the top of the boot under the rear decker panel, most people don't see that one !

Just make sure it's your own chassis number and not one from a pre '73 car -

I might pop down the scrap yard later
