Carpet replacement

Got some carpet remnant that I thought would look better than the existing carpets in my car so having a long weekend I decided to replace them.
Seats out center consol out and sill covers removed and out comes the grubby old carpet , I used the old as templates and cut new pieces .
While removing carpets the floor seemed in good condition untill I got to the near side front well and found the dreaded rust .
Going to have to get it sorted but I have never welded so will have to find a local garage to do it , in the mean time I'm about half way through doing the carpet and hopefully will finish it tomorrow. 20200306_125612.jpg

Mine did the same on the drivers side
and it was the Heater box that looked ok until you removed it and then it was just a pile of dust underneath
l was so lucky it did not rot into the bulkhead otherwise I would have been in a world of pain and in need of a welding course :(
The heater box allowed rain water to run under the carpet.
However I can’t say for certain in your case could be from the drives door but well worth looking into.
Maybe give it a wash with a watering can to detect where it’s coming from other wise your new repair could go down the same route. If it’s just surface rust I would be inclined to wire brush it treat it and prime it with red oxide then I would hammerite it as well might sound like over kill you can just use hammerite but I find the red oxide is excellent for a primer. If it’s solid with no wholes that’s what I would do and it should last a lot longer but only a suggestion, you have been doing a lot of work well done your inspiration will hopefully inspire me to get on with a few jobs good luck with it let us know how you get on ;)

No sign of water Coming in from bulkhead it's just on the floor in corner there are a couple of holes so I will need to have a look under the car.
Always fancied learning to weld so now may be the time.

Rot in the floor edge will have built up over decades mainly from the outside through the sill box section.

Any noticeable water in the footwell will almost certainly come through rust holes in the A pillar where the trim rivets are.

There are many comments on this forum on this subject - as it happens to a lot of cars ;)

That’s a good sign hopefully your heater box is ok, common problem with them leaking very bad design really.
I haven’t welded in years myself but I should get set up with all the equipment Youtube is a excellent place to learn how to weld.

Getting there with carpet now seats to go back in tomorrow, problem is the seats look rough now lol

Haha No dinner for you tonight :p
Just watched a guy on YouTube using a blowtorch to edge the carpet lol :D

Similar topic, removed my floor carpets to get them cleaned. The hairfelt below was knackered. Any suggestions for a for replacement product with acoustic and thermal spec .

Seats back in but before I put drivers side in I decided to pull back the base covering and see if I could improve the comfort due to its rather solid feel .
I took the center foam piece out and used it as a template to cut a new one to a similar shape , the outer peises of foam were more complicated so being as they were in not too bad condition I cut 2 pieces of the old carpet and spray glued them and placed them over each side to give them a little more solid feel and help keep their shape better .
Put it back to gether and into car and the result is far better than I expected. They will do till I get replacement seats .

Nice one Colin On your post that made me laugh.
Your seats are not bad at all considering there probably 50 years old I am in the same boat as you I was thinking about replacing the foam on my drives seat as I have crumbs landing on the carpet, I did a search on the forum for seats and PeterZRH I think can give some good advice I have read his previous posts on seats with interest type of foam used ect I haven’t read all his posts but he definitely knows more about seats than me so I would give him a shout if he doesn’t see the post.
Well that is a interesting find under your carpet :p
I wonder how long they have been under there
Keep up the excellent work I read your posts with interest and even the coins are interesting keep going and best wishes
