*BREAKING NEWS* Tax Exemption extended to 1974!

Unfortunately unlikely to be of benefit to my June 1974 registered car unless it was in stock for a long time before being sold :(

That is good news, I remember that it was one of the first things scrapped by the car hating Labour plonkers when they got in. Good to see some common sense from the govt. Hang on it's not April 1st is it?

Well.... now there's a turn-up!

Indeed! It's a shame that many of the cars (not just Rovers) made in '73 and '74 have been broken for spares due to the old rules though.

I suppose this means Britain's first tax-free 2200!
I wonder what that will do to their values?

What other cars will become exempt this year? Allegro, MG BGT V8, Reliant Robin (is that a good thing?!!)... Anything else interesting??

The Mexico Brown 2000TC I bought from Fester was first registered in Aug 1973. Lack of tax exemption was a factor, along with the horribly corroded sills, in my decision to use it as a parts car. So I reckon this will make it worth saving. Which is nice.

The change doesn't come into effect until April 2014.

What are the chances of my March 1974 registered P6B being manufactured in 1973? Would I need a Heritage certificate to find out?

A nice little extra, which will have cost the government very little. Hopefully the promise of a rolling 40 year exemption will come to fruition, as it'll mean that my 3500 is a slightly cheaper long term proposition. Let's just hope that it doesn't lead to limitations as to use of classic cars.
I think that the SORN reforms are very sensible indeed.

I'd have a flutter on your car being a 1974 build, things were slow at the end of 1973, then a lot of vehicles built in early 1974 due to strikes/fuel crisis etc.

If it has the older type carpet (thinner pile), or if it's got a BW35 instead of a BW65 you might be lucky.

Just searched out some photos of your car and judging by the vinyl roof I'd say it's a 1974 model, which was probably built in 1974, but you never know.

As JVY is 1975, I'm stuffed for now and 40 year rolling exemption probably wouldn't help me till April 2016. Typical of such announcements that are good news for those affected BUT then realise that you have to wait another year before you reap the benefit.

All in all, good news for classic cars though. It should stop VED ringing of pre 1st January '74 cars. If they had announced a rolling exemption, it would put people off ringing any car that was even almost 40 years old (i.e. all P6's)?

It should of been the re-introduction of the rolling date and at 30yrs old with immediate effect!
A token gesture of just a year will on the whole only affect a handfull of cars!
And it wont stop anyone who is inclined to, ringing a 74-77 car to be 1973 built !!

Good God!

Jam tomorrow (1st April 2014) is much much better than no jam at all!

I'm definitely going to shut the idea of a rolling 40 year exemption out of my mind. The shock would be too much.

Chris
