A 'gentle' rebuild of my 3500

The problem is you will treat it as though the free play is still there, and so you'll be opening the throttle far quicker and harder than you would (will) once you are used to it.

It wasn't an isolated instance, I did dozens, and they all followed that pattern. Don't follow the pattern, and you won't have a problem.

I remember it so clearly because I did the tune ups and got paid, then got the call and went to tow the car in, and got paid some more, and then replaced the shaft, and took even more money. Win, win, win!

You watch now, I will get caught out trying to pull out of a junction, hear a bang and coast to a halt and all I will have in my head are your words Harvey and a 'told you so'

Hi Mike , glad to hear it's running well . Made a big difference to mine when i sorted the linkage out , and then had the cards set up ( after i rebuilt them ) Felt like a different car .
Don't worry about braking things , i'm sure your not a thrasher of old motors :D

I always treat my Rover with the utmost respect :D I remember reading your thread on changing your linkages Stina, if you don't mind my asking how much did it cost for the new linkages?

I didn't renew the actual linkage Mike , just the bushes in the bulkhead bracket , and one somewhere on the manifold IIRC Can't picture it now :? They cost only a few quid from Rover classics that was . That was all part of getting the kick down to work , the linkage had been bodged together with cable ties and bits of nylon tube . At a later date i rebuilt the carbs to cure a rough running issue / fault and then had a guy i know set them up .

sounds like it really did need a good sorting out, im glad your happy with the results mike i know i was  peter really knows his su's doesnt he :D

very nice bloke indeed did you get to look round his mini? 8)

I didn't but it was parked in the corner so I ad a quick peak, he had loads of stickers from this year on it showing all his fastest laps and pole positions, he must be a pretty good driver.

I hope so hes been racing minis for over 20 years iirc?

I have always had a leak coming from the sump gasket and have been meaning to fit a new one but I also have a leak from the sump plug where it has been repaired in the past but not very well, so after a bit of searching I found myself a replacement SD1 sump for £20 from a chap off the SD1 forum. All it needed was a fresh coat of paint, so when I have some spare funds to buy a new oil filter and some oil I shall be fitting it.

Another thing on my to do list was to replace my standard steel wheels for some alloys mainly to enhance the handling and to look a bit smarter. I very nearly won some 14" SD1 Minilite alloys on eBay but I was concerned about the availability and cost of the tyres so let them go, they only sold for £50. I have always liked the look of the SD1 Vitesse alloys and having done a bit of research on here found that you have a greater choice of tyres and it will improve the handling. Well lo and behold shortly after letting the Minilites go a set of five Vitesse alloys came up for sale on eBay, I won them for £80 and collected them on saturday :D

Im not too keen on the colour combination and the fact that they are handpainted but four of them have absolutley no marks and the fifth has a tiny kerb mark. The tyres were all shot so I had my local tyre centre remove and dispose of them, this makes storing and working on them easier. All in all a good buy I think. Im fully aware of the arch mods that may be required and the need to change the wheelnuts, which isnt cheap, but luck was on my side again as I have won some nuts came on eBay from a guy who had some SD1 alloys fitted to his P6. He tells me that they are 7/16" and will go straight on my car but I shall wait to get them them before I worry if he had SD1 studs on his car and didn't realise. if I can retain the original studs not only does it keep the costs down but means I can retain the use of my steel spare wheel and not have to buy a fifth tyre and use the alloy as a spare.
The plan will be to spend this winter refurbishing the wheels and shamelessly copying v8guy's and Corazons Vitesse alloys by paintng the centres gloss black and polishing the rim :D Im undecided about tyre size at this stage, wether to gor for 205/65 15 or 195/65 15, the latter giving me a bit more room in the arches, but as that is going to be a large outlay im not worrying about that yet. Watch this space.

Nice work there Mike . I know how you feel , have to save the money before moving on with the next part of the project , Still got a pair of sd1 heads waiting to go on . It,s the bits and pieces that go with them that mount up , Gaskets , skim , studs , bolts ,oil , anti freeze , rocker shafts :?
It.ll look nice on those wheels next summer though :D

Exactly Stina, I had already confirmed my bid on the wheels before I totted up the costs in getting them on the car  if I take my time with them I can fit a tyre at a time when I have the funds :)

nice work on the sump mike :D what paint did you use?

Thanks Dave, two coats of etch primer, two coats of primer and four coats of Halfords gloss black. Hopefully it's quite robust being under the car.

Wow Mike you have been busy 8) those alloys look good 8) I like what you have done to the sump too :)

Cheers Adam, I have started to strip the paint on one of the wheels, it's going to take quite a bit of elbow grease to polish the rims :?

By the way I still gave that spare wheel bracket if your interested?

A small detail that I always liked was the 'V8' badge on the speaker grill which I believe was discontinued after 1974. Well after patiently waiting I managed to find one in perfect conditon :D Fitted it today and I think it really makes a difference, a little reminder of whats under the bonnet, thats if the exhaust note doesnt give it away 8)

Where did you find it in the end Mike? I need one myself, and seeing the difference makes me want one even more :p
