A 'gentle' rebuild of my 3500

something that I have been meaning to do for a long while was polish the spokes on my steering wheel. When I bought the car they were black but tatty so I gave them a couple of coats of satin black to tidy them up, but yesterday I removed the wheel and set about polishing the spokes and the rim on the centre boss. Im quite pleased with how its turned out and makes a difference to the feel inside :D

Gosh Mike! Looks lovely. But is that a factory 17" wheel? I thought they all had a slot, like the 3500S wheels, in the spoke? Yours has holes but is only two spoke?

Thanks Chris :D Nick Dunning saw my wheel at a club meet a while back and commented on it, we think its an after market wheel, maybe fitted at the dealer or more than likely sometime later. I like it because it looks different from what I've seen before.

Seats look superb as well

Thanks Dave, they are Ambla so have stood the test of time although there are a few little marks and scuffs but they're much better than the original stinky cloth seats that were fitted.

The interior of your Rover looks great Mike, with the polished steering wheel really setting it off. :)

Did the yellow air freshener come with a bottle of Nulon octane booster? About 6 years ago I had some like that one, vanilla scent, quite nice actually.

Thanks Ron, haha I actually purchased the air freshener, the car used to be in my dads basement/garage with the windows down and a damp/musty smell transferred to the car so I bought the 'magic tree' knowing that they are quite potent, it actually neutralised the damp smell. It's lost it smell so I will replace it with something more subtle, but it does remind me of my late teens when I was a boy racer zooming about in my Ford Fiesta XR2, it always smelt of vanilla magic tree :D

Mike.
Well you've just inspired me.
Its a long story but I have just joined the forum and potentially have the offer of buying my old P6 back from 28 years ago, but I was dubious about taking on the challenge as when I sold the car it was in pristine condition.
In the mean time I have rebuilt an MGB GT a Vanden plas 1300 princess and I now have a (1972) Triumph stag that I have just complete.
My dilemma is do I keep the Stag and get the P6, Sell the Stag and get the P6 or what?
Having just read through you rebuild I am leaning to selling the Stag and going for the P6 there is just something about these cars and I cannot say what it is but probably just quality.
I will keep you all posted with the results.
Thanks for being such an inspiration however my wallet may not agree with you.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your kind words and I'm glad the work I have done to my car has inspired you to get back into P6 ownership :D I have always loved Triumph Stags, especially the rumble of that 3.0 V8 and if funds would allow I would keep it and buy a P6 as well but if thats not possible then it seems that you are really hankering after one so I would just go and do it and sell the Stag to fund the P6. I know there will be an attachment to the P6 you used to own but it has been along time since you owned it and alot could of happened in all those years, there are plenty of P6s for sale so I wouldn't rush into buying one as a 'clean' car can hide all sorts of horrors. My car does look good (in my opinion) and I have spent alot of time and money on it but it is still not without faults and I have a list of jobs and upgrades to do but I feel this is all part of owning an older car and I do enjoy working on it but certainly not some of the bigger costs
Keeps us informed as to what you do and there are plenty of very knowledgable people on here than can give you advice about any potential purchases.

Mike

The mirrors that were fitted to my car were ok but the positioning of them wasn't great, the passenger one sat right in the middle of the upright frame of the quarterlight meaning you had to lean back to use it! I have been on the hunt for some Wingard mirrors for some time and recently bought some off eBay, so I set about fitting them to the car today. All in all an easy but fiddly job especially measuring up both sides and trying to get my hands inside the door to fit the nuts to the set screws I was using, but not only do they look much better but I now have better rearward vision and I can see out the passenger side without leaning backwards :D

Hi Mike,

Must say that I do like the swept back nature of those mirrors that you have there. What type are they please?

Ron.

Very smart indeed! They really do suit the car so much better, and I must say that I struggle to see much through the passenger mirror on my 2000, as it's pretty awkwardly positioned. I've bought a pair of Wingard mirrors too, with the intention of fitting them to the 3500, but I'm tempted to put them on the 2000, and fit the later-style, Tex ones from my 2000, to the V8.

Hi Ron,

They are Wingard mirrors or Wingard style as they don't have the name stamped on them, but I am told that was sometimes the case.

Thanks Fraser,

Tex rings a bell, I'm sure that's wats stamped on the mirrors I've taken off. I would put the Wingards on the 2000, they are quite delicate looking and would suit the series 1 :)

Ummm, very nice Mike 8) I've always preferred the Wingard type for the P6, and think they work and suit the car better than the shorter type. Though I thought the Wingard mirrors were standard fitment on the P6s?
