'72 3500 Auto...

Afternoon all, thought I'd bung up a few smudges of my recent purchase.... it doesn't half feel good to be behind the wheel of a Solihull Wafter again

She drives beautifully, much better than my last V8 Auto, has power steering and feels very 'together' on the road with plenty of grunt on tap. In fact it feels like a completely different car to my last one! Bodywork is good, not perfect, there's some very light overspray in a few places but nowt I can't sort through, needs a pair of '3500' badges for the front wings too. The interior is fantastic, I know all black isn't everyone's cup of tea but I rather like it, it also has a complete set of headrests and blow me the clock works as well. I'm undecided about the Mountney steering wheel although it does feel good to use. Picked it up last Monday and driven it every day since... even the missus likes it (sort of) which threw me a bit!

Could do with overiders at the back, but I'm not sure if they would go on with this particular tow bar fitted as just below the bumper is a 'square tubular' bar.... is this normal?

Cheers, Nidge

Looks like a good buy there Nidge!
You can fit rear overriders with the towbar, just!!
They will fit just to the outside of the bumper irons!
And a nice finishing extra would be a flipper polished stainless tow ball cover for £20ish
More info re your fitting 'S; trims,on the other post!!

Thanks for that Pilkie, very helpful

Not sure whether to keep the tow bar or not... I've no use for it really but I know from previous experience with my 2000TC it can 'help out' in the event of being rear ended. Apparently the tow bar was fitted only recently by the cars second owner and shows no signs of ever being used.

Just thought of another question (soz).... once I've bought a pair of '3500' badges for the wings, what's the best way to attach them? I know they have some kind of clip on the back but there are no pre-drilled holes in either of my front wings.

Cheers in advance!

Nidge

Hi, personally as there are no holes already present I would use double-sided badge tape. Might even be easier to
find badges with broken pins. This way you don't compromise the paint on the wing so no potential rust problems.

Thanks for the tip.... I'll see what transpires

Splendid motorcar you have there sir! If you fit 'S' trims it will look 'sportier'. If you stick 3500 badges on the front wings with sticky tape it can act as a moisture and dirt trap. If you get badges with unbroken pins it isn't really much bother to drill a couple of holes in the right place and fix them with the right fittings. You can 'Waxoyl' the holes to prevent corrosion. To be honest the stiffening plate on the inside of the front wing, which traps road crud, is much more likely to cause corrosion than a couple of tiny badge holes. What red is that then? Has it been re-sprayed or is it original paint?

Thanks Phil & Dave

Hmm, what shade of red indeed... at first it was advertised as Monza, and when I went to view it I thought it was exactly that, but it's had the door and wing bottoms done on both sides to match up and the painter said it was 'Targa Red' which I'm told by a mate on The Sweeney forum was an SD1 colour! (A can of paint was left in the boot for me with 'Targa Red' written on it). Looking down on the car from my bedroom window with the sun on it, it looks more like Brigade Red, but approaching it this afternoon in the works car park it looked very much darker, not only that but it didn't half stand out from the 4x4s and repmobiles surrounding it. There's no label on the inner wing unfortunately to give me any clues as to the colour / paint code but whatever shade it is, I like it. The whole car is the same colour as far as I can see, door shuts, door hinge areas, boot etc, there's no mention of a comlete respray in the history but you never know do you?

Cheers for the tip re fixing the badges on, too

I like that a lot too, very nice 8)
It would have been Monza on a '72 originally. Though Targa and Monza are pretty similar really.
What make and size are the tyres btw? Only ask as I need some soon and they look nice and 'correct'.

Thanks Peter. I'm off to work in a bit but will have a look at the tyres and let you know.

Thanks Nidge! :)

Nay problem Peter, any excuse to go out and have a tinker. Made in Tiawan apparently those tyres, I've never heard of them before.

Raining again...

I think I may know you from somewhere else in cyberspace...if I mention the name Andy York? :D
There was a shot there of one of your P6s which I mistakenly thought was on wires.
