The shaft in the remote is fairly loose, found what I think are remnants of a rubber bush in all the grease, so I'm presuming that could be a likely cause. Ordering new ones and see where we go from there.

Got the bushes today, also a very very good condition "finger" (thanks Pat). Fitted to the remote and refitted to the gearbox.
All is ok, can select a de select all gears, plenty of grease applied and now to refit everything.

Everything refitted and all seems fine on a shortish test drive. Amazing the difference the gearchange feels now with the new bushes, all so much tighter.
