71 manual box

Reversed onto my drive, can't get it out of reverse. Removed gearstick, using my finger I can slide the selector rod very easily forward and backwards with no resistance ( as if it's not connected to anything) . The box hasn't been playing up at all.
Any ideas please, I presume its a box out job whatever it is.

Thanks
Mick

Not necessarily a box out job. If you can lower the back of the box enough to undo the extension housing with the selector rod, you'll probably (and hopefully...) find something wrong with the selector, i.e. slipped from its clamping to the rod.
If it's only on the reverse that the rod moves easily, but trying other gears it doesn't, then probably it's the reverse selector fork that is not connected to it's rod. As you understand, it's a box out job. At least the car is parked at home! There's always a positive side...

I've got this gearbox in my trike, just wondering if the back end of the reverse selector fork might have snapped off (is this known to happen?) If it has, or if the fork is missing the gear lever should still move left & right across neutral.

I've never had any problems with the selector rods on the gearbox breaking, but I have had worn selector striker levers that have overrun the gearbox rods and ended up outside instead of inside the selector channel. The best way forward is to get the car up in the air and have a look from underneath to see what's happened.

Removed exhaust etc tonight, did take a pic of the "selector rod looking from the rear of the car to the front, not sure if it helps but will be under it tomorrow for better pics.

The selector finger should be in the slot with the selector pads. If the back end of the selector rod is in the correct position then the finger has rotated on the shaft. On the later cars its held in place by a roll pin and a groove in the shaft. I think it is splined and secured by a pinch bolt on earlier cars. I wonder if it rotated. harvey will be along shortly to give his considered opinion

Will the remote come off by dropping the back of the box down to give access to the four nuts or does the box have to come out ?

You can drop the back of the box, and then reach over the top to remove the remote. You need to find the reason why it's overridden the selectors.

Box is still in the car, can now see what's happening, selecting reverse the "finger" travels to far and sits above reverse so does not select it.
What sometimes happens is it does select reverse, but then as I move the gearstick to go to another gear the "finger" is to high and does con disengage reverse so leaving it in gear. Putting the gearstick in neutral and from under the car I can pull it back out of reverse, what's worn or needs adjustment?
Thanks

Mock

With the series 2 there isn't any real adjustment. I'd check that the reverse selector in the box is sitting upright, and not canted over so that the outer edge is lower than it should be. If the gearlever was wrong and the length between the spherical seat and the acorn was longer than it should be that could alther the throw making the selector striker lever move to far, causing the problem, but the most common cause is the selector striker itself being worn. I'd also make sure that the gearlever and the seat are all correctly assembled. The pics in the parts book, (and so possibly the WM) are wrong IIRC.

Remote off, has this worn too much?

That looks pretty new tbh, so if that's the case I'd look for a problem in the assembly of the lever and the remote. You could check it in the selector rods on the box to see if there's excess play.
