ZF 4 HP22 - Gear lever

Ah, so we're not as close as we thought... :(

I was labouring under the false impression that the BMW-spec 4HP22 had an electronic output that could be run through a transducer to provide the cable drive to the P6 speedo. This could be tricky - Leyland DAF boxes (the obvious choice) are like hen's teeth in NZ, whereas BMW ones are almost ten-a-penny thanks to Japanese grey imports.

The speedo drive really isn't a big issue Warren. I haven't got the links with me cos I'm in Thialand at the moment, but I've incuded them in other threads on this topic. You can buy an off the shelf "speedo motor" from the US which uses a toothed wheel attached at any convenient point on the propshaft. All you then need is a short length of drive cable into your existing speedo head. They will make up to suit if required but you ought to be able to find someone local in NZ able to make up bespoke cables. There are some number in the UK.

The biggest issue by far is sourcing a mechanical change box. This is almost certainly going to come from a Land Rover product for you, so you'll get the bellhousing and torque convertor set up for free. The LR boxes also already have the valve block with the lower lock-up speed so there's another result. All you then need is the back end of a BMW box for the 2WD bit.

Thanks Chris, I should have thought that something like that would be available. I'm going to start keeping my beady eyes open for candidate boxes now - I might have to store them before the project ever gets underway, but I'll be ready to pounce.

I know of one that was installed with the standard cable shifter from a BW65. Apparently it works fine, you just can't quite get it into '1'. The question is, how often do you really need to? I intend on trying this myself but I'm still a few weeks away from that part of the install so I can't say for sure.
How has it gone with your conversion, thinking of it again for my car.

It hasn't gone anywhere yet I'm afraid. The estate is such a big project at the moment that it has been under a cover for the last year and I have been distracted by a couple of 2000s. I am currently house hunting for the perfect house with a large workshop so I probably won't be looking at the estate until that happens. :(
