Young driver insurance and "Kinderwagen"

Hello,
the day has come!

The Fleet is insured on classic contracts, i.e. minimum driver age is 25.

My nice, though, spending a year on exchange from Germany turned 17 and her provisional license
appeared in the post today.

Her first proper driving lesson will be very shortly and she passes theory test on the computer without error.

What are my options to start her practicing on the P6 or the Midget or even the A6?

Or would it not be a whole lot more fun to buy another "Kinderwagon" and proper insurance for an
absolute beginner?

What are your recommendations?
Have you got a Kinderwagon to give away?
Do you know a kind insurance broker who may even leave some petrol money in the kitty?

Many thanks for your considerations.

i'd choose the least 'lairy' vehicle you have and just phone up the broker you're with and see what they'll do for you... some can be helpful...(!)

Depends whether her parents are paying .........
Insurance for young girls is generally cheaper than for young boys though

Make sure you're sitting down, and have a stiff drink nearby when getting quotes.

It also goes up steeply when she passes her test & gets a full licence! :(

My daughter turned 18 a while ago. In rural East Yorkshire we paid around £350 whilst she was learning & I think about £700 now she's passed. I think we found 'Quinn Direct' were about the cheapest for provisional holders but then there's a bit more choice after that.

We got insurance in my daughter's name. Apparently the insurance for any vehicle is priced to the youngest potential driver, so you may as well start her own no-claims discount going. Also she should be able to drive your P6 3rd party under her own policy.

I doubt that, drive any car 3rd party cover is being withdrawn as it is used by too many dodgy people to get away without insuring cars

The Co-op used to have a good deal for kids as named drivers, worth a try.

I'd imagine the Midget would be cheapest to insure... I was insured on a 1966 Beetle from the age of 17, and the Midget is similar power etc.

The P6, if a V8, will be tricky to insure until the driver is 21... I'm 21 on my V8, but finding insurance for my 18 year old brother on it the best quote was £3k...

well i am 24 now and last year my insurance on my v8 was £80 so that was a bargin dont know wot is going to be this year i started off on a 2.2 p6 when i was 18 and that was over a grand but my v8 worked out cheaper

I work in insurance and was talking today to a man who has insured his 18yo son to drive his 58 reg Jaguar XF (?) .Premium £10500 a year !

I got a quote last year to insure our 18 and 20 year old student sons on the wife's 216 cabrio, as additional drivers, would push her insurance up to £7500 !!!

It's surely impossible to see how these premiums can reflect the costs concerned. I know youngsters are more likely to have accidents, but £7500?

I agree, what happened to the benefit of the doubt ?, couldn't they give a "reasonable" premium initially, I'm not saying cheap just affordable, then if they have a claim hit them hard, this encourages safer driving, and helps to prevent uninsured drivers, which is an increasing problem.

Failing that, put the qualifying age up to 21.

That makes £10.5 K look cheap for the Jag
Being young male and a student are 3 of the worst criteria for Insurance
Girls get it a lot cheaper, a 19 year old near me has comp on a 53 reg Mini for under £1000
