As the title suggests ! My speedo goes Whoop Whoop Whoop as i drive . Been ignoring it for ages as i've had other things to devote my worrying mind to ! :?
Needle jumps to the pulse of the noise up to about 5 mph , then settles , then above 40 mph the needle waves + - 5 mph around the true speed .
Seems worse when cold , as in cold days , nothing to do with engine temp .
Interfering with the lovely v8 base note .
Tried turning the old radiomobile up to drown it out , but thats all 80's musik and adds !
Is their something ( cable ) i can oil or just let it brake and sell her as really low miles

Tina, I was driven crackers by the clicking noise my speedo made, I had a spare angle drive, so I tried swapping that, it cured it, I wonder if your angle drive/cable is in need of light lubrication?

John

Or maybe it's just a happy car and likes to whoop and holler?

Yep sounds like it's between the cable and the angle drive at the back of your speedo. I did this when i first got PAE. A little graphite grease in the end of the cable is the trick. If that doesnt work then you need to find a new cable and angle drive for the back of the speedo.

Mines an s1 but i'm guessing the cable is similarly awkward to get at on an s2. it comes out of the transmission tunnel at the top and goes accross and up into the instrument cluster above the steering wheel. I had to manouver the instrument cluster (after some undoing) forward to undo the thumbwheel which lets the angle drive and cable loose.

sorry for the cross post john... but i'd typed that out and thought i'm posting it now i've typed it :)

John . There's not much that wont benefit from a little light lubrication ! Where is this angle drive ? How do i access it ?
Gear box , or behind dash ? Or both !

There's one angle drive fixed to the back of the speedo head, and one at the gearbox end (which is the one that normally fails).
You can remove the lower one through an access point in the gearbox tunnel, and the top one by removing the perspex and the speedo head. You can then pull out the inner cable and lubricate that, but use grease sparingly. You can use the inner cable to feel if the speedo head isn't seizing while it's all apart.

confused . com !
So i'm looking to remove the dash and speedo and do my lubricating in that area ?

Harvey beat me too it, mine was the top one, if you release the instrument pod and pull it forward you can't miss it, strangely enough it's on the back of the speedo
It also stopped my speedo given an approximate speed range 0f +/- 5mph

John.

that's what i did. ON mine the gearbox end was also shot (as harvey pointed out they go more often!) but the noises were coming from the top once i'd got a new gearbox end angle drive.

Rich.

O.k guys .
Have a look over the weekend , possibly having the heater box out any way . Can't deny the matrix is leaking any longer ! and it's getting cold , even in sunny Bournemouth !
So it's just cables and lubrication then .
Off to the sack .
Well lubricated myself , considering work tomorrow :?

Hi guys . Got a bit brave today and took the dash apart to grease the angle drive . While i was in there i fitted a new face level vent as the leaver was broken on mine , blasting cold air at your face weather you like it or not . Looks a bit drastic but had it on a test run about an hour after the pic was taken . The speedo is now quiet and i can shut the vent off .

Clearly a cause for a bit of whooping and hollering! You instead of the car!

P6's are really a very elegant (in the engineering sense) assemblage of parts aren't they! How many contemporary cars could you do that level of dismantling so easily?

Chris

You certainly are a very handy women Stina.... :D

Indeed Chris, the P6 is like a meccano set, everything designed to be dismantled and put back together. Many modern cars with their integral parts that require replacement in their totality don't even come close.

handy indeed,. Had Pam Ayes over ere in NZ the other day and listening to her on the National Radio station as she wass talking about carrot crunchers and such I could not help but think of you  undoubtably the indomitable Pam could come up with a poem to reflect the effacacy of the handy work of yet another carrot cruncher and her P6!

Excellent work Stina, you are indeed a handy woman !

I find a lot of this modern stuff where they say it should be replaced, can actually be disassembled and repaired, you just have to be brave, I go on the old addage that it was already broken, so I can't make it any worse. I recently fixed a problem with the 75 window controls by stripping the unit down and cleaning all the contacts, works perfectly now, most people would just have pulled another from a breaker.

A metaphor for life Mr Webmaster!

Well done Stina, you've probably got rid of a few rattles and squeeks when you refitted everything back nice and tight.

Yes I dont hold much with the just replace it method of repair and on most occasions will do a complete repair on the origional unit, stripping small electric motors, rebuilding switch contacts, rewinding mechanical regulator coils etc , non repairable sealed units get opened and reconditioned. Maybe its just the Scots blood but it is one of the most enjoyable parts of classic car ownership for me, repairing the unrepairable.

Is that all there is behind the dash of a P6?

There's normally some small change behind the clocks. (Add that to what's down the sides of the front seats, and under the back ones, and there's money to be had!)

Found one large gold earing behind mine!! couldn't find a second one  loads of paper clips and the odd hair pin.
