Wiring - Lucas Square 8's, SORTED, next, THE ICELERT

Right, I imagine this is a pretty open and shut case here, however, its -8 outside just now and although I can bring myself to work in this weather (as the mental goal of sorting my car within a year of my epic breakdown comes close) I cannot bring myself to fault find and check earths etc. I have instead opted to take photos, come inside, eat and post on the forum instead.

RIGHT, bought some Lucas spot/fogs lamps the other month and just getting round to wiring them. From what I can understand, there are two blue/yellow wires under the passenger glovebox (see photo) which in turn need to be connected to one red/yellow wire which in turn connects to the switch behind the dash.

The previously mentioned wires then feed through the engine bay to the light cluster where there is a vacant female bullet connector which is where you plug the red and yellow wires off the spot lamps into? Then as you'd expect, the black wire off the spot/fog lamps then connect where every other light connects/earths?

I've done this and I'm getting no life. Either because this is not how it is done or beacause I need to check connections and earths etc. Is it important that both blue/yellow wires from the glove box are connected to the red/yellow wire at the same time or would this simply mean you'd only have on spot/fog lamp on.

Below are photos to explain what I see, if more clarity is required, it can be provided though the medium of interpretive dance.

p.s. can anyone tell me whether this radio is original also, what make is it?

Re: Wiring - Lucas Square 8's

Everything should work pretty much as described. The two wires under the dash just go in opposite directions in the loom so if you only connect one wire, only one light will work. Just find yourself one of those double width bullet connector blocks. It is worth first making sure that your fog light bulbs actually work! I did have similar dramas when fitting the Square 8s to my S, I hooked all the wiring up and checked it with a test light and got no sign of power but when I actually mounted the lights and plugged everything in, voila! They all worked. It may be worth checking the fuses... I see you have one there made from quality tinfoil, and make sure that no leads have been unplugged from the back of the light switch. But essentially, you've got it all right and you are probably going to have to check it all now. Sorry. :(
The stereo is certainly not original. It is a late '80s item I would say. The brand is usually printed on the cassette flap. If it's not there, then there may be a label on the body of the unit but you will have to remove the stereo to see.

Fraser,

Might sound daft but is there working bulbs in the lamps?

Also it has been a while since I used mine but I think you need to push in and turn the switch.

By the looks of it, that radio is a Roadstar or other £15 cheapie using seventies technology and eighties plastic fascia. Definitely worth replacing for something that'd do your interior justice :D

I've just checked my foglamp wiring and I have both yellow/blue wires connected to the yellow/red wire through a double bullet. The lamps are then earthed individually to the body where they are fitted. Hope this helps.

Re: Wiring - Lucas Square 8's...SORTED THAT, next the ICELERT

Right, just an update to let you know I did in fact get the wiring sorted for the Foglamps. I don't know exactly which bullet connector it was, therefore, I chose to clip off all the connects and re-attach new ones, cleaned out the earths and I have one lamp working. The second lamp has a blown bulb, so I'll get that sorted in the future.

been on a bit of an electrical roll today, as I've managed to sort out my Rev Counter, there was a brake in one of the wires twinned with a dirty earth. So I fancy tackling the ICELERT I have had sitting in the garage. I know there is wiring diargamme from the Rover Club of Cananda online, I'm relatively sure I can follow that, however, I'm unsure as to where the wire are routed, were the wires should be connected under the engine bay, then too the dash.

In short, I could wire the icelert up outside the car in the garage for example, but when it comes to doing a neat clean example of wiring it into the car, I may need some guidance.

Anyone know What I'm doing with this?

On RVW a Federal P6B ,the Icealert wiring disappears into the harness and surfaces behind the trim at the warning light and rheostat.which are located near the bottom corner of the windscreen . It is irritatingly located, right in the edge of the drivers field of vision , you can't ignore it
Mine works well blinking nicely as the temperature drops below +3c and shining steadily at 0C . Unfortunately there is no way to turn the darned thing off . it's a seriously useless device in Montreal where the temperature is below oC for around 5 months of the year[It's -15C today!!]
Cheers

Hi,

the parts book lists an in-line fuse holder with one male bullet connector coming out on one end and another one emerging from the other, but with a double female bullet end to wire up the fog/spot lamp leads in the glove box. Fuse rating is 25A. I made one myself to get it working, does job well and looks pretty much original.

Cheers, Klaus

Cheers, that would be ideal.

I bought most of the items in pretty poor condition, so it would be good if I can make sure the wiring is all correct in the event I have any problems.

Let us know if you find anything, would be appreciated.
