Wiper delay

Any ideas? Wiper delay not working at all. Stripped governer, diaphramn intact. When replaced, by blanking off both the rubber pipe outlet and the foam rubber port only a delay of 4 seconds acheived. Is the rubber pipe actually surpossed to provide suction and if so from where and how is it connected. Thanks

4 secs is not too bad .
Mine had failed totally and I went through exactly what you've done so far .
Start by checking the tube that runs from the thin white twist knob on the left of the steering column shroud , through to the wiper delay governor.
Remove the steering column shroud and test by holding your finger over that end of the air pipe that runs from this point to the wiper delay governor .
Wiper on to test .
You will be checking for air leaks in this tubing .
Mine had a split in this air pipe [ 40yrs old ] behind the stereo .
Simple fix . Just thread a new pipe through . Air piping is freely available at auto shops .

Cheers Gerald, thanks for your reply

Not checked the pipe physically BUT I canot blow air down it (by mouth) or suck air up through it, so the vacuum in the governor should hold, which it does not! On close examination the pin (that should slowly emerge from the governor once it is pushed in) would appear to be slightly bent. I am assuming this is causing the vacuum to be lost prematurely. Pherhaps some sealent applied 3/4 around the inside of the governer cap through which the pin travels may slow the vacuum to give a longer delay, anyone else thoughts much appriciated

Would particulary like to know (as mentioned in previous post) whether the tube is surposed to provide suction to extend the vacuum inside the governor or whether it just acts as a blank to the white inlet therfore only allowing air to enter through the form port into the governor. If it merely acts as a blank then obviously in its current state, for whatever reason I am unable to hold the vacuum long enough without reverting to the sealer

No suction provided

Yes that's all it is. With the pipe disconnected from the governor and a thumb (or other suitable blank) placed over the port, you should get maximum delay ie when you push the plunger in it should almost not come out at all or only very slowly. If the plunger is coming out too quickly in this test then you have a leak somewhere in the governor or the bit of foam in the top is too porous allowing air to re-enter too quickly.

Cheers dave, Already blanked both the air pipe port and the foam inlet port off completely and pin still only takes four seconds to fully emerge, as you suggest the only fualt can be a leak. Although all four clips are present and correct the join between the two havles of governor is the most likely suspect, however I will attempt to seal this joint and see if things improve. If not I will locate the leak useing the tried and trusted method we have all used when we were kids in order to find that elusive leak in our bike innertubes!
