windscreen wippers/motor/cable

Hi all, Coming back from wales on the m40 my wiper blades jammed ie they collided with each other. I switched them off immediately and pulled onto the hard shoulder and untangled them. However, they wouldn't work when switched back on. Thursday I went out and tried them and discovered I had "single" speed with the wipers but delay and fast have disappeared. Today with the help of the sticky on here I have checked I have voltage where should have and removed the wiper motor cable and wheel boxes. both the cable and wheel boxes seem ok just the usual muppet damage to the nuts on the drivers side wheel box.

I have been unable so far to find any reason the wipers collided any suggestions on what else to look for would be greatly appreciated
many thanks
Coop

ok I have taken the wiper motor apart as far as I dare and still haven't found what could cause the wiper blades to collide with each other. however I have a few suspect parts now I have taken it apart.

should the cable have the kink in it?
many thanks

Hi, I think your problem may lie in the wheel boxes. Take the wheel boxes apart and check
the toothed pinions, as the the cable only operates on limited portion of the wheel it may
be it's worn to excess and one of them has jumped. If you mark the shafts before you
remove them you can put them back 180 degrees out, so that the cable works on a fresh part.

ok after having slept on it and a fresh look this morning I think I am going to need a new set-up. the motor is very rusty inside and missing bits (according to the wm) one wheel box squeaks as u turn it and the other the thread is knackered. the cable wont lie straight either it has a kink in it. only person out the three usual suspects that even suggest they stock the bits is wins but he wants money for them because the wheel boxes are nos.

There are other companies that do the wheel boxes with 40 teeth but its unknown weather the rest of the part is the same and will fit. Has anyone replaced theirs if so where from

many thanks

Hi, If the wheel box is squeaking then it may just want lubricating. These wheel boxes are
fairly standard parts and were fitted to a variety of BL cars and other makes because they
could be made up to fit a lot of different applications. So I would suggest looking at Mini or
Land Rover suppliers for them. The only usual thing they do is,as I said, wear one half of the
wheel so turn it 180 degrees. Thanks to Vaultsman, in another thread on wipers he put up
this link for Lucas 16W motors. -

Or try getting a secondhand motor, but you may need to change the big gear in the gearbox.
They are stamped with the degrees of arc for the wipers on the screen.
