My 2000 TC would not start this morning ? It has been parked for a day, prior to this it had done a 2 hour trip with no problems. It turns over but wont fire ? It did cut out last week end the facet fuel pump stopped Could this be the problem now ? The pump is ticking away non stop which i have not heard before ?

any Ideas ? I have not checked for a spark etc it does have electronic ignition fitted.

Thanks
Aaron.

Sounds like fuel from your description... just a case of checking things one by one though... Is there fuel in the dashpot, is there a spark....

Could be something like coil though - these things normally go in the manner you've described in my limited experience...

Sounds like fuel due to the pump noise description, but if not, have you replaced dizzy cap / rotor or condenser recently ? if so it could be one of those new parts that has failed, quite common for new ignition parts to fail at the moment, poor quality parts are being produced.

Thanks, I will look at it in the morning, the dizzy cap and rota are new but seem ok ? I will remove the pump and have a look at that.

Will let you know.

Hi Aaron

Nice to see you on here. Any idea how the convertible is getting on with its new owner?

A constantly ticking pump usually implies there's no petrol for it suck. Where is your pump, at the back or in the engine bay? If in the engine bay there are many more possibilities for non delivery of fuel. Most imply a leak somewhere in the system from the tank, which ought to be fairly easy to spot on the garage floor or on the fuel guage  Some that don't would include blocked fuel filter, a foreign object wrapped around the filter gauze (or collapsed gauze) in the tank, or a damaged O ring in the reserve tap.

Regards

Chris

Hi,

Hello Chris, Not sure about the convertible have not seen or heard anything since i sold it ?

Well i took the pump apart today all was ok, i checked the spark all was ok ? So i put on some jump leads as i had flattened the battery ! After a couple of long turn overs it fired in to life ?

All seems ok but as i use this as my every day car am not sure if this will happen again ? I suppose i have lost a bit of confidence in it, I drove it for a bit and it seemed to be all ok ? So i suspect it is still a problem with the fuel delivery.

I am thinking i may return it to mechanical fuel pump and remove the electronic ignition, What do you think ?

Aaron.

electronic ignition really helps reliability... I'd only remove it if it appears to be the culprit. Last time i had a problem like that it was fuel at the bottom of the tank getting dragged through the carb... What are your fuel filters like? Are they full of rubbish?

I would suggest simply being prepared for a breakdown, rather than swapping things around now. Carry spare dizzy cap, rotor and the parts required to swap back to points ignition, plus whatever you need to swap back to mechanical pump. Then your prepared for any eventuality, oh and of course make sure you've got breakdown cover.

In fact the big benefit of breakdown cover is that they will diagnose the problem for you if it happens again while your out !
