Whining noise at 70mph

Just been for a run up the M3 and the old girl ran sweet as a nut. But at just before 70mph a whining noise comes on, sounds like that tone they used to play when the BBC used to close down at night. I think it's coming from the front of the gear box, rear of the engine. As I pass 70 it drops off and vanishes. My best bet is the gear box but its oil is good, gears change perfect no other ill effects so could be something else. Put it this way, if it were coming from the rear I would have said it was the diff, its that kind of sound. But it only happens in a very small window of speed.

it's an auto with a BW35 box, I have no experiance of these.

Any ideas???

Richard,
I had this noise with a Super Minx which used the same gearbox. I flushed it with some gunk the club got for me, changed the fluid and the noise never came back, it shifted a lot better too. Other than that I dunno. Got a radio in your car? Maybe it`s Terry Wogan :D

All the best, Drew

70mph should be about 3000/3500RPM so try to get the noise by revving the engine when stationary, if it's there then I would guess that the filter in the box may be getting a bit blocked. It could also be alternator noise. Try and pinpoint the noise a bit more accurately.

When I rebuilt the engine I cleaned out the filter and replaced the oil, had to as I had spilt the old oil every where! Never had worked on an auto before so was very surprised how much oil is in them. :)

I've tried reeving the car as well as driving in 2nd to see if the noise starts and for now it does not, seems to only happen at 70. There is a chance that its coming from else where up front, just that the kind of noise it was sounded like a gear sort of noise. As the car drives very well and I very rarely get to run up the motorway maybe I should just keep an eye on the box and wait for what ever it is to fail more so I can then fix it. :) If the noise starts to happen just from revving I'll clean it out again. I guess, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :D

Thanks,

A few possibilities to keep in mind while you're listening.... 4 cyl cars are known for having exhaust resonances which would sound as if they came from about this area, need both revs and throttle to set them off; wheel bearing and UJ noises are notorious for sounding as if they come from somewhere else and can be very speed senisitive; what about wind noise, sometimes that can sound very "droney" and be very speed specific; TC's are known for vibrating their inlet manifold heat shields, perhaps you have a heat shield to vibrate?, starter motor perhaps?

Let's hope it's not the box, I expect you've had enough practice at lumping the engine and box in and out for now! Once it develops some more definite symptoms don't forget there is band adjustment you can do to the '35 in situ.

Best of luck, and best not to get paranoid!

Chris

My father-in-law hears a persistent droning, or whining noise, if he travels at over 60 mph!
He knows what it is but cannot shut it up - It's my mother-in-law!

I've done the UJ's on the prop and the ones on the half shafts are good. It could well be a vibration from the engine, she did have a rattle from the centre box till I hit it with a hammer. I'll keep an eye on the oil level and see how the box is. If it starts to play up, heavy gear change etc then I'll take a look. For now the box feels very smooth. The best fix for now is just not to do 70. ;)

Thanks.
