Whining BW35

I have just topped the gearbox oil up on my 1970 3500S NADA auto as it was a bit low. Now the gearbox whines noticeably in, and only in, first gear. As soon as it changes into second the noise goes. I have done nothing else. It was always noisier in first but now it is much more noticeable. Can fluid level cause this?

Hi Rich.
Did you check the level when warm and with engine running on a flat drive?
Just fitted a replacement BW35 to mine and it made a little whine until the new fluid got pumped round, and I had to suck out 1/2ltr as it was over the max hot level.
Now reads ok within the hot/cold marks when hot or cold so that will do,and no more whine.

I will check the fluid level when warm and see where it is. I have only driven it to the MOT and back which is around 3 miles so a proper run might help. NADA's don't have a filler and dipstick in the engine bay but a level pipe coming off the gearbox sump under the car which is a bugger to get to, to read, and to fill!

Yup, binned off my filler tube & sight glass for that very reason & replaced with a standard sump, dipstick & tube.
