which water pump?

Hello,

I was told that there are two models of water pump that go on P6s: one is sized 155mm and the other is 185mm. Does anyone know which one would fit in a 2000TC year 1972?

Thanks!

I don't know but you might find out by checking which ones rover classics or Jr wadhama specify. I'd always want to buy from someone who supports p6 owners so would just phone one of them up!

I think that there was just one type of water pump across all 4 cyls.

I'm sure when we had to replace ours many years back, there were two different types/variants listed in a local motor factor's spare parts catalogue. One for up to 1971, and the other for post 1971. Although the car was a late 1972 K reg (registered 20th July 1972), we had fitted a TC engine from a late series 1 car, so the correct one in that case was the early version.

But I am not sure which one was the 155mm, and which is the 185mm!

My 1973 dated factory parts manual lists only one water pump, part no. 568734.

I don't know if this helps though... :|

There were different types but I can't remember all the differences. Later ones (series 2 I think) had an extra boss cast in for the alternator adjusting strap, some had an extra spacer fitted to the nose where the fan mounts and early ones (pre crossflow rad) had a smaller diameter inlet pipe. I have a box of pumps at work so I'll have a look when I'm in and see what the changes were.

As far as I know there are 2 types of water pump. The earlier type is for cars fitted with a generator, the later ones for cars fitted with an alternator. I believe with slight alteration to bracketing, to hold the fan belt tight they can be interchanged.

I did have a problem once with the listing in one of the parts supplier's catalogue being wrong. I think that the number was for the water pump for the SD1 Rover 2000. It was quite a bit longer, and it did not fit. I took it back for a refund. The boly holes were larger as well. It kind of looked the same until you put it side by side.

My parts catalogues shows the number to be 546320. These catalogs are both from september 1966.

My 1977 Rover shop manual makes no mention of there being 2 different types of water pump.

James.

OK, here are two different pumps.

I'm pretty sure the early pump is on the left and has the extra boss for the dynamo adjusting strap. It also has a shorter snout because the radiator sits further back in early cars. The later pump is longer but the early pump can be used with the spacer shown to compensate for the difference.
Essentially, either pump will fit your car with minimal fiddling. The only time you may have a problem is trying to fit a long pump into an early car with the vertical flow radiator as there may be clearance issues.

I bought a new old stock water pump for my 2200TC without realising there were 2 sorts. The new one is the shorter type with the extra boss, the original is the later sort. It looks like it would have fitted, with the fan sitting further back but I've now decided to rebuild the original and have the correct type for the car, so the early type is now surplus to requirements if anyone wants one.

Yes, that rings a bell in my mind! The one on the left looks very much like the pump that was on the 2000TC engine we had (taken from the series 1 car), and the one on the right looks very much like the one that was fitted to the original 2000Auto engine.
