Hi there!

Can anyone help? I am looking to fit a period radio to my late 1975 2200SC but I am unsure as to which radio would be authentic or did Rover fit a selection from different manufacturers?

Many thanks

Russ

My 1975 V8 has got a "period" looking Radiomobile AM radio in it. I don't know if its the original but it looks fairly seventies!

My 1977 2200tc came with a very nice little clarion unit in it. I reckon it is an orign as the front mounting plate was a 1st class fit for the dash.

I recently aquired a 74 V8 which had a Philips unit that appeared to be fiited by a chimp, it had tape deck and pre select but was a bit out of place. I have now fitted a Radio mobile radio cassette which looks good, just the right amount of silver.

My 2200 tc now has a modern panasonic with 6 cd changer, I have a blanking plate for period looks for shows but then I have an ariel fitted so get rumbled.

Look on ebay for a radio mobile or a motorola, there is plenty about so don't pay to much, even if you buy a untested one if you like how it looks then you can fix or buy one that is definatley working.

My Radiomobile was 99p and £2.5 postage and it works which was a bonus. I got the tape deck as you can get the thingy that works with personal cd players.

there are a number of modern cd decks which look fairly retro, in my clubman estate i have a pioneer head unit which has two large nobs either side, has a brushed aluminium frontb which whilst not period looks a damnsite less crappy than a bright blue display with dancing dolphins on it!

id consider moving it acorss to the p6 if i was to do alot of miles over the summer (alongwith speakers) but i cant see that happening so ill just retain the AM/LW mono unit it has fitted already

Coiln - you can get fairly descreet windscreen aerials which work ok, they stick on the inside of the screen

You can't get any more 'period fitting' than the Radiomobile/Motorola 8-track unit with radio. I did and am enjoying every minute, passengers love it too. Tapes also bought by the boxload for next to nothing. You can record over with cheap home deck, iPOD <> 8-track :)

Dancing Dolphins! Agreed!

Paprika , if you are driving a period car with a period radio, you really ought to be listening to period music. I had a box full of period 8 track tapes which got lost and over the years I seem to have bought replacements on CD. I don't remember the sound quality of 8 tracks being that good , mine used to slow down with the engine
I like a bit of Motown while cruising in my 3500S

Ah Dave, but I am ;) My antique Vinyl collection is stored MP3/WMA - Bowie, Elton, Roxy, Oldfield et al. 'Motown Gold' tape I picked-up in the boxload.

Yes, it can be muddy at times, but this Radiomobile surprised me as it is nice and bright ...that was of course after I cleaned the head/rollers and tweaked the head azimuth. I've not really noticed it as much worse than ol'compact cassette. No experience of slow-down at idle speed. It's staying - but I will admit to CD units in me other 'younger' motors.

One job on the P6 list is to maybe run the Radiomobile|iPOD using a simple ext amp with source switchover.

I must confess I haven't caught up with this MP3 /Ipod/WMA (what's that?) technology yet .I have got DAB radio indoors so I am getting there.
I recently got a pair of add on tweeters from Maplins and with one either side of the dash, a speaker in each door, my Panasonic CD /radio sounds pretty good. I couldn't go back to AM only radio
Mine came with a Motoradio MW/LW radio ( a rare make) which I'd removed before I found out why it did not work amd that was because there was no earth thro' the aerial base
Do you remember the in car 45rpm record players Phillips made in the 60's? Imagine turning over your singles while you drive.....

Now that's an....
no I think I ought to stop the retro fitting lark right there. Unless I buy a Landcrab too - plenty of under-dash room in those.

You're right about MW/LW pretty hopeless now as barely anything on but Radio Fatherland and fishing gale reports. Best find any unit with FM.

Amazing to find one on E Bay !
Are you a a Lancrab fan ? Me too. A nice Wolseley 18/85 S or Wolseley 6 would be just the job

Hi
I recently upgraded my 1976 3500 with an elderly bluespot which gives MW/LW & VHF with a cassette player (circa 1978). and all it needed was a new drive belt which was still available from the manufacturers.
The other dodge was to use the rear shelf speaker and the console speaker as the stereo pair with no extra hole drilling. The balance control now balances the front back sound.
One of the advantages with the Bluspot is that they are predominatly black and don't look out of place.

Your speaker positioning solves the problem of where to put 2 speakers but the stereo imaging would be wrong -OK if you drive along looking out of the side windows !
People were fitting door speakers in the early 70's so it's not glaringly wrong as long as you fit a fairly "plain looking" pair
Dave

My Three Thousand Five still has the speakers in the front door panels from the previous owner (there were 4 in the rear parcel shelf and a graphic equaliser in the centre consol, now both replaced) joined to a period radio/cassette player for day-to-day use but I still have the original Radiomobil and centre consol speaker for when I come to sell it. Originality counts!
Regards, John.
