hi all seen 2 2000 tc,s on ebay tempted to have a go at one of them but dont know which ,both similar mileage and condition just cant make my mind up which is the better car and both quite a long way from me, one is lunar grey the other blue wondered if amyone knew anything about either car? cheers

Hi, i am from Hollond i don't know the cars.
But if it is allowed, lift the backseat out of the car you can see if the car is rotten on that place

id go for the lunar grey one as its had a respray and looks like a nice house with a well organised garage i thiink its probably worth the asking price, rich

I think both look good bets. But as everybody who knows P6's will tell you - good panels can hide a rotten base unit. Only way to assess this is to go and look. If you spoke nicely to Nick Dunning you might persuade him to have a look at the Lunar Grey one, as I think it is reasonably close to him - drop him a pm.

In terms of which car I prefer, I would always go first to look at an un-respayed car that looked tidy. With a respray there's a chance the exterior has been looked after and the base unit not. My other litmus test is the state of the piping on flat pleat seats. If left in the sun the vinyl vertical panels shrink at a different rate to the leather seat faces and you get crinkly piping. So a car with crinkly piping is evidence of it having been outside for long periods (and hence perhaps rusty in important invisible places) and / or the leather being dry. Both these cars pass that test.

But again, there's no substitute for going to look.

Don't believe the write-ups, the proof is in the pudding!

When I go to look at cars for prospective owners I've stopped reading the descriptions altogether in most cases.

:?

It's about time a few of us got together and did a youtube video of the key areas to inspect when looking at a P6. I have the old p6roc valuation video, but I think we could condense it for a straight forward "spot the rot" type video. Can probably skim over running gear issues, it's the base unit condition that's most important.

Guess the first stage there is for somebody to volunteer a really rotten p6!? I very good idea though. I'd have loved to find something like that when i got PAE... (However i might not have bought PAE!)...

I was thinking a rotten free standing base unit, next to a complete good car, so you can see how the panels cover the important areas. Something like that anyway.

You know, since I had the transplant my brain has been churning out all sorts of mad-cap ideas, actually feels really good :D

What about that cut away car that was auctioned a few weeks ago. It might be possible to use that before the holes get welded up?

Dion, I think the either car look reasonable in the pics but like others said, lift the back seat out and and also pull the carpet away from the vertical section of the inner sill where it meets the floor.

Check inside the rear wheel arches/ dpost right up against their join with the outer base unit. Ask for pics with the sill covers off before you visit. If its good they'll have nothing to hide!

No Nick

The proof of the pudding is in the eating........

So many people misquote this saying

Out of those two, I'd go for the lunar grey car. The blue one has a black front valance, which would suggest that there are potentially some nasties under there. The lunar grey car looks like it belongs to a Rover enthusiast, given the colour-coded 75 in the background, so I think it's maybe the safer bet. The only way to know, is to look at the actual car, but the lunar grey one is the one I'd look at first. :D

I think I agree.
Nick et al's advice is definitely the most sage, and it's what lurks beneath that counts. But it seems unlikely that an owner would go to those extremes to 'tart up' a complete dog - the engine bay for one looks like it's had more than just a good clean, and the leather is virtually NOS!

That said, the reason I'd be more attracted to the Lunar one is the potential for tax-exemption. On an 'L' plate, there's a 5 in 12 chance you'd get free tax (more if you can prove build date). Unfortunately, there's absolutely no chance of that with the 'M' reg blue one.....

Should that affect your decision?? Definitely not - it's the car that counts, not the year - but it is worth bearing in mind when considering the cost of any potential repairs that might be required. Sills only need doing once - tax needs doing every year!

If you would like to borrow my cut away you are more than welcome. I don't think the holes will be welded up until next year. It's in a barn in Scotland though!

Never need much of an excuse to visit Scotland

Could be a while though, got to get out of hospital first.

hi all thanks for the advice have decided to pursue the lunar grey car new clutch and unleaded head etc swayed me also the chance it may be tax free dont know how to go about that, but will worry about it if I get the car. I have sent the seller an email with some relevant question,s as the car is around 360 miles from me its awkward to just jump in the car and go have a look which would be the best plan in an ideal world.

What you need to do is find a P6 owner close by who is willing to go and look at it for you and knows what to look for.
On the other hand, work out how much it will cost you in time and money, and then engage the services of a certain expert who is not too far away from it.
Or maybe he has contacted you already!
