Series 1 cars had Rover letters above the rear number plate until the end of the '69 model year. For 1970 they moved to larger letters on the lower left of the bootlid and these were carried over for 1971 and the first of the series 2s. 1972 got the printed plate badges 'til the end of production.
The 3500 badges were cast alloy until 1972 when the switched to printed like the Rover badge. If you have a set of cast 3500S badges, they came off a NADA 3500S which would have had the Rover letters on the lower left of the bootlid.

Badging has a fair few variations. For the Rover part of rhe story, the car was launched with snall chrome letters set across the top of the numberplate plinth and all models kept these until the start of the 1970 model year in October '69. At that point the Rover letters change to large individual aluminium letters placed at roughly the llevel of the bottom of the numberplate plinth and to it's left. Final change is to the plate badge in roughly the same position, but a bit lower introduced after a year of S2 producction in Oct '71 for the '72 model year.

The model badges are unfortunately much more complex. For 2000's there are three types. The original cast chromed badge which lasts until the start of S2 production when it is replaced by a pressed aluminium badge of approximately the same appearance but with strengthening webs between the digits. The plate badge then arrives for approximately the start of the '72 model year in October '71. V8's start with a very heavy chromed brass badge but extremely quickly change to a plate badge in heavy plate and the 2500 engraved into it. This gives way to the standard printed type of plate badge at the atrt of S2 production. All three types look visually identical at a quick glance.

Hi Chris,

Actually this should have happened a little earlier, at the same time that the R O V E R letters moved (enlarged) from the top of the number plate plinth to the bottom left corner of the lid. The "new" pressed aluminium "2000" badge had the digits appear on a black background.
