wheel arch rot

Hi,

I had a first closer look into the boot today - since purchase - only to face a bad surprise. Left hand wheel arch and left boot corner are in pretty bad shape. You can even see the tyres through it.

Any ideas what to do in the short term?
For a complete repair does it make sense to look for spare parts or is welding the better choice?

I have to say it doesn't look that bad. I know you can see the tyre, but it doesn't appear to be a huge yawning chasm. I reckon a welder could patch that up in no time, and its not in a place that's going to be on show too much. It depends what you want really I'd say get it welded if you want to keep using the car. The only slight worry is if it's a bit close to the fuel tank. :?

Hi,

thanks. I know a welder nearby but he has no idea of a Rover. Does he need to dismantle the rear wing etc.?

Thomas,

You will be able to remove the wind there is two bolts at the door edge, one coming into the innerwing/boot another below the rear valance and you will need to remove the screw hold the valance to the wing.

Any welder will be able to repair that without special repair panels. With the wing off check the condition of the top wheel arch, is gets crusty and if he is there may as well get stuck in.

found more rot on the top of the arch. it's on the surface only so far. I have the feeling that it rots from the inside out. maybe a bad rubber seal or so.

one problem is that water drips on to the inside top of the wheel arch.

Can come from various places but a favorite is the two bolts that hold the decker panel to the body. Water drips on to the arch and into the boot or down under the back seats.

Quite common and although not great it can be repaired easy enough.

Talked to a welder recently. He meant it's a whole days work. Impossible, isn't it.
