Whats happened ..........no drive!!

Typical bank holiday emergency

Car has been in regular use for 3 yrears or so running fine however recently noticed clutch a bit "juddery" when reversing up steep hill, didnt think anything of it. Set off home from work today and as i did so stalled it like you have let your clutch out a bit sharpish. Into first and away did not seem to be picking up any speed (clutch slipping?) into second and same again, only now the car is losing speed and reving more. OH DEAR.

Car is now stopped and no drive available in any gear, ticks over nicely stationary in all 4 gears with no foot on the clutch!

Clutch feels normal still has pressure arm moving in and out on the clutch housing there is no fluid loss, propshaft is still whole and located where it should be, no strange noises and as mentioned above no drive.

1 Anyone know what has gone wrong, (the clutch seems to be on permanently if you know what I mean)

2 What parts do i need to fix it or is this only assesed once the clutch is taken apart

3 Does anyone know the correct clutch kit for a 2200 tc man and best place to purchase from does it include all parts needed or is there anything extra i need to buy

4 Any other jobs worth doing at the same time

5 How long should a job like this take (garage not me) approx labour costs.

Many thanks for any advice given

One highly distressed individual who wont be hooning around in his p6 this bank holiday weekend ......boo hoo!

If the clutch release arm going into the gearbox is still working normally, then there is only one option. The clutch plate has broken up leaving the friction material physically separated from the centre drive hub. All other faults I can think of leave the clutch permanently engaged rather than permanently free.

I suppose it is just possible that ALL the pressure fingers have broken off the clutch cover, but that seems even more unlikely!

Either way, I can't imagine a clutch kit won't sort the problem. I'd want to renew the clutch release bearing (GRB204) as well.

Anyway, be thankful your mistress has good timing! At least you know what you are doing for the bank holiday now.

This could also be a problem with the diff. The symptoms sound the same as snapping a half shaft on a Land Rover. I don't know how strong the diffs are, and how likely this is to be the case, but stripping the teeth on one of the output shafts from the planet gears could cause loss of drive. The easy way to check is to start the car, and with it in gear look underneath to see if the prop shaft is turning. Make sure the handbrake is on, and don't get underneath the car when you do this incase whatever is wrong fixes itself and you get run over! It's probably safest to do with someone else in the car.

Cheers,

Tom

A couple of weeks old yes, but if help is still required, a friend's 2200SC recently had a similar problem. What had happened in this case, was there was obviously a ridge or something similar within the slave cylinder that stopped the piston returning to its rest point - this jammed the clutch open. He's sure that this was the problem as after a replacement slave cylinder, the clutch worked perfectly okay.

Cheers, Adam.

Already had a new slave cylinder a couple of years ago, it would seem on strip down, not for the first time, Mr York was totaly correct in his diagnosis, the clutch plate had indeed broken up leaving the friction material seperated from the drive hub. New clutch kit installed by Mr Annabelle and all is well once more. You cant go wrong on here when people know whats happened to your car without even seeing it , can you??
