Hallo all,
Took my car out yesterday evening for the first time in just over a week. Battery needed a boost as it`s on its last legs, but after that it started fine with a bit of choke. Its a 2000 TC by the way. Drove okay for about a mile then whilst at idle at traffic lights was threatening to cut out, and I had to keep blipping the throttle to stop it doing so. Once on my way again the car refused to pick up any speed for a bit and couldn`t get up enough revs to get into 2nd. Everything passed me which was a bit embarassing! Eventually went back to `normal` and I made it back to my driveway, which is quite a slope. I left the car for about 2 hours then decided to go out for another go. Unfortunately it was now running worse than ever and I decided to put the car away for the night...but it wouldn`t give me enough power to get up the slight gradient of the drive! After about 10 mins at this I had no choice but to let the wife sit in the car as I pushed it back in! I had similar problems a while back that were condenser related, and I`ve checked all this first and all seems well?????Confused and worried!! ??? Drew

Drew,
I always suspect the electrical side before the fuel as a rule - This damp weather is not good for cars used infrequently, especially if left outdoors! I suggest starting it at night with the bonnet up to see if there are ant signs of "tracking" (sparks stand out better at night). If not, check points gap, plug leads and connections, especially at the coil, change condenser, spray leads with WD40 or similar - In other words all ignition electrics. Check battery and earth connections. If still bad then its on to the fuel system!
Keep us posted.
Regards, John.

Like john says check the ignition electrics out.

I had a problem with my 2200tc a while back. Because I was tinkering with it, pulling on the choke running it a bit moving it 20yards the plugs had sooted up. they other thing was the imbalance of the carbs.

I would suggest that you run the car then pop the bonnet and work the carbs manually. You will hear the suction if they are out it will be obvious. The screws could have worked loose. I had this problem and it was like there was no power.

You might have an air leak on the induction side , a split hose on a breather or the brake servo

Could have been carburettor icing in this cold damp weather but that normally clears as the heat soaks through the engine

Hallo again,
Couldn`t get to look at the car til it was dark this evening...it won`t start at all now. I don`t have a garage at my new house and I just got over a stinkin man-flu and couldn`t be bothered messing about in the rain. I got as far as checking all the wiring on both the high & low tension side of things and all seems fine, though didn`t use a voltmeter or anything. Will try and `make` time tomorrow. I have a feeling the new condenser I fitted less than 8 months ago has given up the ghost!???
Drew

Hallo again peeps,
It was that pesky condenser again! What is it with those things? One minute it`s fine, next it`s making your car bounce around like a spacehopper!?! Popped a new one in and bingo! running sweet as a nut...well a salted nut at least! Had to clean the sooted-up plugs as well afterwards, which didn`t noticably change much to be honest, it`s going quite well now although needs a tune up. Ho hum, all I need now is to get my replacement `box in to cure my 2nd gear difficulties...and get a new MoT certificate...it`s all go eh this P6 business? Cheers to all who responded to my post.

Drew :D

Drew.
Be aware frequent condersor faults point to a coil breaking down, whhichh incidently also causes the problems you experienced.
