WHAT IS WRONG WITH BRAKES!

The brakes on my 3500 auto don't feel right. They seem ok then need a lot of pressure -its as though they have come to the end of their travel then need a shove. If i press them gently it feels as though they are pushing back against me?? When I start car after pumping pedal it sometimes gives the same sensation - is it the servo and what checks can i make? :?

It does sound like a servo related problem, it could just be that the vacuum hose has collapsed.

Pump the brake pedal a good few times to exhaust the servo, then with your foot still pressing on the pedal, start the engine, you should feel the pedal move down as the servo takes effect.

Remove the vacuum hose fitting on the servo, and dip the chamber to see if it's got any fluid in it.

Hello Lunarboy,

The booster (servo) is indeed the problem. I have also experienced the very some 12 years ago...not very reassuring when you are trying to stop and the pedal is pushing back at you... I fitted an exchange booster and the problem was solved.

Ron.

have swapped pipes and it does the same. Pump it to exhaust it then start car - pedal pushes back - so it's new servo time :( still nice to know that I will be able to stop properly :)
