Water gushing out from carb

Hi folks, I'm new here. I have a 3500S and just started it after many years. It ran but huge amounts of water are coming from a small tube in the nearside carb manifold. Any idwas what the cause maight be?

Hi Harvey,

Thanks for your reply. Having looked at the manual, I cannot see that water can get anywhere near the carb. Although I couldn't smell it yesterday, I can now, and it smells like (very old) fuel - I had some 10 year old four-star that I added to the old four-star already in the tank earlier in the year. (Maybe that was a mistake!) The tube is next to the emissions control tube and looks to be a carb overflow pipe - it just goes to open air down the engine.

This morning the car won't start at all - it tries - with some fresh fuel in. I'll recharge the battery and see if things will happen! When it was running yesterday the engine was running very smoothly.

Hello Mac,

The tube (float vent / overflow tube) where the fuel is pouring from is due most likely to the float having failed in that carburettor. The floats are plastic, and over time will degrade allowing fuel to enter. When this happens the float sinks and the fuel level within the bowl rises till such time that is overflows.

This is why the overflow tubes or pipes if you prefer which also plastic must be kept in good condion, otherwise if such occurs while driving and with a hot engine,...well you can guess what will happen.

Hi Sydney,

Yes, now I've determined that it's fuel, I agree. Ther's no fuel like and old fuel. I had this happen on a motorbike once. Not exactly fail-safe! So, its look for the screwdriver and get a new float!. That's before I check the body and attempt to free up the brakes and see if it's any way MOTable...

Take the tank out and get rid of the old fuel. Then if you have an air line, using a blower, clean out the fuel lines. Clean the floats in the carb and make sure they are free. I would also fit an in line fuel filter as there is bound to be some crud / corrosion in tank where it has stood. Refit everyhing and see how you get on.
