Warped disk/hot spot/Machine Disk?/ New Pads?

Hi Guys,

this is a little un related to the rover forum as its to do with a newer Holden, however i still think it could be an interesting question.

I have a 2010 Holden Epica, recently i found when doing between 80-100 k's i had massive brake shudder and vibration through the steering and brake pedal, so its a warped disk!

I have since taken back to dealership, under the new car warranty, they machined the disks- all 4 and off i go again.

Question- i now have half a brake pedal- prior to going into the dealership it was very firm, now i have to put my foot down half way before i brake.

Thoughts???

Secondly, should they replace the pads it i have a hot spot/warp and the machine the disk as it now has coated the pads with glaze from the disk??

Thirdly, would the be required to re callibrate abs ect?

No.4 - i have only half full brake reservior? Also, should the brake system be bled?

Im going to call them tomorrow and have a chat but would be interested in peoples thougts.

THanks guys

Hi, a car under warranty should have new pads and discs.

There wasn't a horse tied up outside was there?

Similar to what I was thinking

Hi Luke,
Having worked in several main dealers in the uk, common practise with work under warranty is to replace old with new. I would be worried of what's left on those discs and if new pads had been fitted as you say brake fluid is now showing halfway. I would go back if I was not happy thats for sure.

There is a machine to reface brake discs on the car without dismantling
Your brakes wont be 100% until the pads have bedded in to the discs
If the reservoir is now only half full it woujd suggest they have taken an excessive amount off the discs or pads.
Take it back and ask for it to be done properly with new parts

Guys

I ramg the dealership this morning, they said to give it a little longer and see if it beds into one anthoer, ill give it the weekend, if not happy still ill take it back

Interesting as i wonder how much meat they took off the disk, i think i want them replaced with pads, its only done 15 thousand k's, its not even run in properly

Will up date next week!

I'll join the chorus here, take it back and tell them to sort you out properly. A significant amount of pedal travel should not suddenly occur, nor the loss of fluid level, and you don't mess about grinding discs on a warranty car as it's not unlikely to be a manufacturing fault unless you've gone overboard in how you've used your brakes. Pads I personally wouldn't be that worried about, but after being victim of a bodge job I would demand all new stuff.

I'm afaraid I wouldn't machine any disc under any circumstances! This is a cheap dodge for the penny-pinchers of this world. Nor would I re-use existing pads against a new disc surface! The lack of fluid and poor brake, suggest to me that when they re-assembled the rear brakes they failed to get the handbrake adjustment right, or something similar. At any rate it is WRONG!

I'd go so far as to say FIND ANOTHER DEALER! The chances of attaining satisfaction with this one are zero. Or even better ring up Holden customer service!

I thought it was the front brakes that had the issue :?

Anyway, more thoughts from me. Presuming there are listed tolerance for the disc wear for your model, how many years use have vanished during the skim? What have you lost due to the faulty item? :|

Yes it used to be common practice in the industry to machine, not any more though, and not when new. Pads and discs wear differently nowadays with current materials and the discs are changed every 2nd or 3rd pad swap as a service item on most cars

As for pedal travel, it should be the same as went in, fluid should have been topped up, end of IMO.

Was it ok on their road test? :?

I'd want new pads and discs and an apology or three

Contacting the manufacturer's customer services department with a vague mention of the newspapers or a car magazine will generally result in a frantic call from the dealer and the job being done properly for fear of the manufacturer giving them another call.
A mate did that with an imported Audi that had a recall for the model ignored and the dealer fell over themselves to keep him happy after Das Mothership gave them a few ideas about the correct way to handle the customer.

Car went back to Holden Dealership today, all fixed and as good as new- after a brake bleed and topping up of brake fluid- told me air bubble that gave me the soft brake pedal- and they re beded the calipers and disk and pads- told me would take 500 k's to be 100% but i reckon its about 99% right now

Hi Luke,
Sounds like they only did 1/2 the job 1st time out.
Glad to hear they have sorted it for you and that your happy with the outcome.
