Wanted: 2000/2200 auto donor car

I've just been lucky enough to pick up a very low mileage and beautiful 1975 2200 auto - judging by what the previous keeper was saying and the amount of fluid on the ground it looks like it has a blown gearbox - may well have been towed -(we need to start the car to confirm, this is pending as there are other problems)

Has anyone a running but rusty Series II 2000 auto or 2200 auto in reasonable striking distance of Guildford they'd be prepared to part with. We will collect. Body condition not important (we're not breaking a nice car!)

Cheers

2200 auto, non runner, oil slick of ATF like the "Torrey Canyon" underneath, probably been towed to try and start it, this is all sounding horribly familiar. All we need now is an AA diagnosis of broken timing chain to have the whole set!

Oh yes...however the car has just 16000 miles on the clock, full history and...the piece de resistance....still has the original Centurato tyres (personally I wouldn't drive on them, but it's amazing to see..)

And it cost me very, very little. If the engine and box are scrap it'll still be worth doing the car.

sorry if i gave the wrong impression Nick, what you've found seems to be what we all look for,the right car at the right price. With the symptoms you list I'd look to repair the engine/box so keeping the car in it's original condition.I wouldn't think both would be beyond repair.Diagnosis over the internet isn't always easy, but I'm sure I'm not the only one to have seen that list of problems before.By the way the AA diagnosis of bottom timing chain snapped happened to me on many occasions, but in my experience they were always wrong.Sounds more like a flex plate to me.Give us some more symptoms so we can all try and give you a definate diagnosis.

It this moment I can't do that, as well as the leaking box, the starter motor is off the car...someone's played with it big time. When we get a spare minute (hopefully next week) we'll get the starter back on and try to fire her up. Keep fingers crossed.

When buying an inanimate car you have to presume the worst, and then be (hopefully) pleasantly surprised!

I do have my big suspicions the car has been towed though.

On the positive side - there are are brakes!

Cheers

Surely a broken flex plate wouldn't cause loss of fluid - a cracked torque convertor might , but I've not seen one of those for years. Think that was on a Granada when the mounting lug tore out

If the flex plate breaks while running rather than starting, it can all jam up and rip the spigot clean out of the front of the converter.I have seen this happen.(admittedly only a couple of times)

The good news for me is that we have a good torque converter in stock. However will be next week before we're able to make an accurate assessment.

I have a complete 2200 SC engine & auto box (execpt alternator and fuel pum bolts) its located in central scotland(falkirk). It came out of a car Feb 2005 was very quiet and changed all gears ok. Was onlt able to drive it up and down garden) It will need at least one engine side plate as I noticed when turning it over (every month or so it has started to leak - send me a PM if your interested. I'm not on broad band but check every day or so now.
