Vacuum advance unit

That's an advance/retard unit so you'll have to plug the retard fitting if you want to use it on a P6.

And

no they're not, they are just an economy device that only work with the throttles closed for the most part.

Hi harvey, thanks for your reply, could you explain where the retard fitting is that i have to block, and will this device be just as good as the other members vacuum advance units? economy device meaning slower?

That one has vacuum fittings on both sides of the diaphragm, you use the one farthest away from the distributor body, and plug the other one. AFAIK the normal P6B ones are still available so if that's the distributor you're planning to fit it to, that's what I'd use. It's nothing to do with "slow", when the throttles are closed with the engine on overrun, it advances the timing and saves fuel. Well, that's the theory anyway...

Thanks for the info, i have already ordered it and i sent simonbbc a message regarding compatibility and have had no reply. if it turns out to be no good ill look for an original, thanks again.

For what it's worth from what I've heard in the event of any problems he does put in the effort to sort them.

The vacuum module that I have fitted to my distributor features advance and retard. The retard connection has a plastic cover already fitted. If the one shown above is the same as mine, which by the look of it, it is, then the vacuum points and the amount of advance provided are the same as some of the OEM units that were fitted to the 35D8.

You will need to cut a slot in one end of the bracket to facilitate fitment to your distributor Bert as all later distributors featured a slight change in their mounting points, and the later vacuum units reflect this. There is also a rubber gasket which fits between the vacuum unit and the distributor body which is not included. You could pick one up from any Land / Range Rover parts supplier.

When i asked about one that looked like this on my dizzy he said it was not used/connected i think?

Hi Bert,

No, not that rubber grommet. The design of the OEM module and the later Lucas items are quite different in terms of bracket design and how that interfaces with the distributor body. The photo of the grommet that you posted above won't work with the later modules at all.

Bert,

If you have a look at the thread below, you'll see photos that I have posted of the current Lucas vacuum module.

That's great info, thanks. it does look a lot different from my original unit but I will figure the gasket out. your dizzy looks different, Do you think my 35D8 dizzy should be upgraded to yours or are they fine? Another question is about your luminition kit, did you buy the performance kit with the coil or the standard kit? Ive been eying up the luminition kits but cant decide on what kit.

Hi Bert,

My distributor is a 35D8 that I had purchased as NOS in 1990. Prior to fitting to my 4.6 the springs were changed and the unit regraphed so as to work correctly with the new engine. You can certainly have your distributor overhauled and then regraphed, but any changes made would suit your 3.5.

The Lumenition kit that I am running is the standard item working in conjunction with the original Lucas 16C6 coil. The standard item works perfectly with any road going Rover V8 engine. The performance kit is designed for high revving engines, so any Rover V8 that is seeing 6000 rpm through to say 8000 rpm on a regular basis such as in motor sport would find benefit there.
