V8 Tickover troubles

I had this exact problem on my 2200TC last year; idle speed too high. btw you can't set the timing accurately as others have suggested if the idle speed is high because the centrifugal advance is active.
It turned out to be the vacuum advance diaphragm was holed. Air was being drawn in through the holed diagphragm in the distributor via the vac pipe to the front carb.

I suspect that the difference here is that the V8 runs ported vacuum, not manifold vacuum. The vacuum module on the V8 can be defective, and it won't influence the idle speed.

If the butterflies are not closed, that will certainly have a positive influence on idle speed.

I rebuilt the carburetors using all new seals, gaskets, jets, needles, throttle shafts and butterflys. The engine is now running as I would expect it to.

The old seals were completely knackered and there was a lot of build up on the old brass needles and jets from having had straight 95 unleaded run through them.

If anyone is running a car where they know the carbs have not been rebuilt with modern seals etc I would highly recommend doing it. On my HIF6 setup it took me about a days work and the parts were £95. (I did have access to an ultrasonic bath which made it easier)

I am now going to rebuild the carbs on my friends P5B which uses the older carbs without emission control and the parts are £75.

Matt.
