V-8 engine - re: baffle plates

I am just about to finish re-building a V-8 engine - and ended up with 3 (three) baffle plates - to be placed on the rocker shaft assembly. There are 4 positions they could be placed. I guess there are only two correct positions. In Haynes workshop manual on page 27 one is pictured in fig.1.12, where is the other one to go? on the other cylinder head assembly (front or rear?) and what are the actual functon of a baffle plate? any ideas will be greatly appreciated thanks... baffle: to confuse - so they work!

sorry could not resist it. and cant help as I cant say I've ever had to do what your doing. baffles tend to be in place to stop oil surges in sumps and as splash guards where breathers exit to stop oil being thrown out of breather holes... maybe thats where it goes- below a breather hole in the rocker cover?

According to my Repair Operation Manual is the one baffle located on the front on the left head and to the back on the right side. The point is that it should be furthest from the notched end on the rocker shaft.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for your replies, I'll place them as mentioned by Blueman, but I find it interesting that they are omitted on the SD-1 engine - it should be exactly the same rockershafts-system, but perhaps it doesen't really matter if they are there or not? cv

I had baffle plate over the rockers where the oil filler is.
I removed it - can't find the reference but I read somewhere that they serve no useful purpose, in fact it is detrimental to have them, probably explains why later engines don't have them.

If you decide to keep them in, I donlt think that will cause problems likewise if you remove them - your decision.

thanks 02GF74, now the plates are in place as advised by Blueman, however, I'm also of the oppinion that they are of no use at all.

"If you decide to keep them in, I don't think that will cause problems likewise if you remove them - your decision"
That's exactly what I tell my patients before surgery.. :D

hi all, according to my p5 factory manual they are refered to as 'oil baffle plates',fitted to prevent oil mist/spray from being sucked up through the flame traps.the third one should be fitted under oil filler but can be ommitted.those of you who have the earlier rope seal type would be advised to fit them back to prevent oil filling the traps and increasing the risk of exccessive crankcase pressure,SD1 had a revised crankcase ventilation
