Urgent enquiry: rear wing seals - Which way round!!

Hopefully someone can give me a quick answer to this one as I've got to refit the wings at the spray shop over the weekend.

The question regards the sealing strip that fits into the c-section metal chanel behing the rear wings.

I've bought 2 new seals from Jeff Weekly but I don't know whether to fit them with the long part facing up or down.

Photographed nearly everything except this during the stripdown!!

Thanks in advance

Benent

Hi Ron,

The seal is a bit like a comma section so that the ball end of the comma is shaped to fit into the c-channel and the tail of the comma is the long bit i'm referring too. I'm not sure
whether to have the long bit facing up or down.

Let me know if it's still not clear and I'll take a piccy

Thanks

Bennet

I do don't I!

The yellow colour is 2K primer. Final colour is jaguar pale primrose yellow which I believe is close to april yellow. Some of the panels are already done and I think it's going to look luverly!

Hi BBLongman,

I recently replaced my rear wing seals and I installed them with the long bit (the tail of the comma) facing upwards. The previous old seals as far as I can recall were fitted the same way.

Page 15.09 of the 1977 factory parts catalogue shows these seals clearly (part numbers 364121 and 364122), and the tail of the comma is definitely pointing upwards.

Hope this helps. Happy motoring!

John Larkin.

I'd call that a definative answer.

Many Thanks John.

(No motoring till next spring as there as an awful lot of reassembly to do!)

Hi All,
BB, just perusing your website, and is that an Ariel square four I can see in the corner of your garage?
Cheers

Certainly is. We've got two actually (what a show off eh!) I've got a '53 Mk2 and my girlfriend has '50 Mk1. If you're ever around the high peak area of Derbyshire on a sunny day you may see us, two black bikes, black leathers, helmets and ultra-sensible flourescant green bands everywhere!

I've just been given the remains of 1950's swallow jet 80 sidecar and thats the next restoration project after the Rovers done. Should be easier one wheel, no engine!

Incidentally if anyone knows of an old Ariel motorcycle for sale i'm looking for a 30's machine of any type (most of them are singles anyway) to restore.

Two! so does that mean you have an oblong eight?
On a serious note an old friend of mine used to have a couple of the 50s? 60s? two stroke Ariels (the ones with the pressed steel frame Arrow? Leader? I can't remember the names) leant up against his barn - I know they are not old enough for you, but inside his barn he also had a number of 30s bikes - the only one that made an impression was a Scott squirrel - quite bizzarre, but there may have been an ariel in there somewhere. Anyway, I am not sure where in the world he is at the moment, last time I heard he was in S.E. Asia but I will try to get in touch with him for you.
Cheers
Al
