Upgrading P6 from 4 spd manual to 5Sp man

G'day guys,

need some more advice for the 1974 Rover 3500S I am currnetly restoring, the gearbox has a serious 'tick', when in first gear & given the clutch needs to be replaced, and parts are in short supply for the 4 speed manual gear box, I am considering dropping the 5 speed manual transmission from an SD1 into her? Assuming I can get my hands on a SD1 manual transmission.
Just wondering if anyone else has taken on such a task & are the two transmissions compatible, meaning I shouldn't need to change any mountings etc ?

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete,

I'm (temporarily) stalled with work and life stuff - not to mention a knackered fuel pipe - but the thread Harvey's linked to is mine, and I've got a V8 LT77 sitting in the lounge on the '70s-contemporary carpet just gagging to go in.

...hopefully in the next few days! :)

I'm sure it'll be a revelation when the car's finally back on the road as it's crying out for a 5th gear.

As well as the box you'll need the V8 SD1 bellhousing and remote extension c/w gear lever, and the SD1 clutch. Your P6 slave cylinder may be OK with a spacer, but budget for an SD1 cylinder. Also, make sure you allow for all the other parts you're going to need...clutch release components etc....and the P6 rear gearbox mounting will need to come out as well as the mounting ribs for it.

More anon, and hopefully soon, in the linked thread.

Cheers for now,

Red - the big wreckers at Talbot had a few SD1's when I went there over a year ago, he may have a 5spd from one?

Can someone recommend a garage that has the experience in doing this conversion? - I'd love to have a 5 speed box in my 3500s but I'm not experienced enough to even think about it.

best thing the p6 v8 needs a 5 speed box i would never look back mine been like it now for over 10 years
