UK MOT's - Variable quality!!!!

In Belgium - the "MOT's" are done by the state in massive "hanger" like buildings.

Personally I think this is the way. When I lived in the UK MOT stations were in many cases small garages who also sold the cars hey MOT'd - conflict of interest. (or MOT stations who got a lot of business from certain traders)

Last year I bought a London Taxi with UK MOT from a so called "specialist taxi garage" -hahahahaha. Had the Belgians look at it and they found a few small holes and a problem with the suspension so severe it was banned from the road! - Upon further investigation - (ie removing the "splash panels" in teh front wheel arches to gain better access to the suspension and remove the front wings - discovered that there is NO metal behind! and the sills hidden behind the chrome trim have disappeared leaving slight traces of rusty lace!

As far as Im concerned a UK MOT is not worth the paper it is written on and the sooner the UK copies the NI and European inspection methods the better.

I agree that MOT stations ought to be totally independant,
thats why I take mine to a council approved site that does not sell or repair cars.
However they are not allowed to start taking thngs apart like splash panels, wings off and chrome trim! thay have to MOT with what they can see!!
As the P6's have screw on sills, they used to question the fact until I put them right, but they cannot unscrew them to see the rot if any behind them.
You will find that MOT regulations vary across the world, and what passes in one will not pass in another! No excuse if the suspension is dangerous like in your case. But the faulty item can be fixed and the main problem "RUST" will not be seen then it would pass!!
When inspecting any car, where do you draw the line???
With your taxi, does it have a seperate chassis? If so,in the UK, any visible rust within 12" of a body or suspension mounting point will fail, the sill could be rusty and holed and still pass a UK MOT!!
I suspect the MOT was very dodgy!! and didnt give a good impression of how an honest MOT station does the job.
You could take a car for an mot without an engine and it could pass!!
