The way I understand it is that the first number is the width of the tyre, the second the profile and the last the wheel size.

As the profile is expressed as a percentage of the width, increasing the width will also increase the profile height, even if the number remains the same. In your case by approximately 7mm, so the height of the 195 tyre will be around 14mm higher.

I am willing to be corrected by someone more 'in the know' :?

Hi, yes you are correct. But it is still 1" smaller than the correct size of 185/80/14.

The tyres that you have at the moment Gareth, 185/70 are the wrong size in terms of rolling diameter when compared to the original spec tyres for the P6B which were 185/80. If you have had the speedo recalibrated to correctly read with the smaller profile tyres that you are using now, ie 185/70, then going to a wider tyre such as 195 means that the profile will reduce as the height of the tyre is as codekiddie explained, a percentage expression of the width. So to keep tyres of the same or as close to the same as what you have now, 185/70, the replacement tyres will be 195/65. This will give you a speedo error of only minus 0.67%, which you would not even be able to detect.

hi ron thanks for that i did have the speedo re done a few months back and had them done for the 185/70 but would like 195 on her but if its to much hassle i wont bother

Hi Gareth,

There is no problem in using 195 / 65 tyres if you have already had your speedo recalibrated to suit 185 / 70 tyres. You can use either...
