That's coming together nicely !, welding is definately improving. I like the boxing in, and panelling work in the arches. Get some 24 grit discs on the grinder and you'll be able to dress those welds back nicely, although it will take ages ! Should be able to cut that black brace out now.
Just need to tie in those main rails. We'll have to come over and gesticulate over the best way !

I can see that the steering rack of the (now) rear wheels is still in place.
Perhaps an opportunity to go into 4 wheel steering too, or you think that it is becoming too ambitious... :D

Tricky enough to get the gearchange linkages working properly, dread to thing how complex 4 wheel steering would end up !

Going to be interesting locking the streering rack, or replacing it with linkages that will allow for rear toe adjustment.

Right then, I'm a bit late with this update, spent a very happy day over at Craig's last Saturday helping to get the 620 engine bay fully welded into the 25 and the 25 rear panel welded back on, felt like I was welding all day !

We added a rather serious box section between the front chassis legs of the 620 and the sills / chassis legs of the 25, the box was at least 3mm wall. We then used some heavy angle sections to brace the chassis legs to the box section...

Craig still needs to finish boxing this area in and filling the gaps between the 620 chassis legs and the 25 arches and sills.

We then boxed off the rear of the arches and added the rear panel...

What amazed me was after welding the rear panel back on, we closed the tailgate and it fitted perfectly testament to the work Craig did to brace the shell before cutting the floor out, and not forcing the 620 engine bay in, but trimming it until it just fitted, we re-attached the bumper and light clusters and it now looks totally standard again !

cheersfor posting this i have been thinking of making a rear wheel drive 45/400 ths has given me raher more confidence tat it an be done!

top notch work by the way :D

Richard's work is always top notch! ...however, I've been doing some work filling the gaps; so not quite the same level of quality!

I've finished the nearside now, including the floor infront of the rear arch.

and started filling and grinding the centre floor section in front of the engine..

I think my welding is getting better though :)

Doesn't look like I'm going to get chance to do any more work on the car until the weekend, as I'm on a SQL 2008 course this week! More progress this weekend hopefully...

Nice work, definately improving, hope you cut some more of that floor off before welding that big plate over it !
I've managed to spray the stone-chip on the sill and in the arches on the 216 tonight, so it's ready to paint at the weekend now. Too many midges to do it after work, would look like a "Jurasic Park" Amber sample once the midges land in the laquer !

Oops.. you never mentioned that!

I've have thought about that though, honest. I was thinking of welding it all up from underneath aswell, putting some more sheet metal to add more strength etc. I still need to tie it in to the chassis rails at the sides, (the bit we cut through, with triple skin and really strong)..

Although, it's going to be fun trying to weld under the car.. Wonder if we'd be able to somehow get it up onto my ramps for more clearance? Could do with one of those thingys which allow you to turn the whole car body upside down!

You mean an old matress ? That's how we did Stu's Morris Minor, lifted it on one side with an engine crane until if rolled onto an old matress.

However, I assume you mean a body tilter..

You might be ok if you just get one side of the car up quite high, just gives you a bit of an angle to work at and a bit of room to move, welding upside-down can be very painfull, especially when you get molten metal down your sleave !

Had a call from Stu over the weekend, he's snapped an exhaust stud off in the head of his Caldina.

Is it just me or does that car look completely featureless & boring? No offence.

Nah! What you want is a bit of string:

It's a mates car, he loves the jap stuff, had an early RX7, Nissan 200sx, Celica GT4 and now this, basically an Avensis estate with the 4WD 2ltr Turbo running gear from the GT4, never sold in the uk. His first car was a Minor, and he was the original owner of my first convertible P6 project, maybe that put him off classic cars ?

I wouldn't exactly call that a bit of string, post office wouldn't be pleased if you wrapped a parcel with it ! :D

Excellent project! Hows it coming along?
I am also building a twin engined car currently- I too have used the front inner wings from the same base vehicle in the back and modified the front suspension to suit. I'm doing some unrelated structural work on it at the moment but the next stage will be making the engine mounts and putting the engines in, then the gear linkeage etc. I'm not too much further ahead than you by the looks of it but your welcome to any advice or thoughts on how to do things that I can offer! :)

Haven't been over for a couple of weeks, whilst I've been sorting the wifes' 216, apparently he's been making an engine crane and fitting the front engine.

What car / engines are you working on ? It's great that people are still doing these sort of projects !

I agree it's great that people do these sort of projects! There's a hint of British eccentricity about it all I always think
Here's my project, a twin engined Mk3 Escort:

I'm doing other sillyness with it alongside such as getting it as low as physically possible, and making it able to still seat 4 with a flipped over gearbox to create more engine set back. All good fun! Was hoping to hve it out by now but i've gotten a little behind schedule
