Turbochargers and Superchargers - Silly Questions

Hi There,

Has anybody attempted to fit a turbocharger and/or supercharger to their P6?

I know that Janspeed did a twin turbo kit for the SD1 V8, and that some of the Range Rover V8's were supercharged. If anybody has attempted to fit either item into a P6, or has ideas as to how easy / difficult / impossible it would be, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks in advance...

Chris

I don't think there would be enough space on a P6 for twin turboe's, and then there's the heat......

A supercharger would work though, Hot Rod guys have been doing it for years, it might look good sticking up through the bonnet, if the rest of the car was given "the look". But would'nt it be easier (and cheaper) just to increase the V8's capacity ?

I saw a Morris Minor once in "Cars & Car conversions" fitted with a 3.5V8 , the guy had home made a twin turbo setup on it and it was making 350bhp. He won the "Modified Car of the Year" award...... Now if he can fit that lot in a moggy....

I've been looking at some of the more recent Chevy small blocks (mostly alloy now). Apparently 5.7ltr marginally smaller than a Rover and only slightly heavier, oh and between 350-400 bhp too. I've found a company that will supply brand new Corvette 5.7ltr full engines with 6 speed manual boxes 405bhp for a snip at £11K !!, probably tear my P6 in half at the first traffic lights !

Twin turbos will fit in a P6. It's tight and you need close fitting headers to get them in especially the right side as you look at the engine bay.

I saw one once - if I can find the details I wil post them

Superchargers are another matter - hole in the bonnet job - although they are easier to fit once you get the pulleys right.

Hi. Can't find the link now, typically, but scour the web and there is or was a very detailed technical account of an SD1 in which the owner had installed a blower, without it poking through the bonnet. It was a remote mounted blower... I think it was a modern unit too... If I find the web address I will forward it to you.

That supercharged SD1 looks fantastic, a lot of work and imagination went into that. Still think a P6 engine bay is to small, but maybe thats a lack of MY imagination.
Fitting a US small block V8 sounds like a good idea to me, loads of tuning parts etc for BIG power, probably cheaper than rustling up a 4.9 rover with all the bits (don't quote me on that !) All you have to do is make it fit. Check out Real Steel and also Custom Car magazine for bits new and 2nd hand (US and Rover).

PS Happy Christmas !!!, I was just checking for festive mails and got distracted, honest !

A supercharger for the Rover V8 that actually works would apparently cost silly money (£10K+!).
It would probably be better going for a blueprinted, larger capacity unit which can develop over 350 H.P. easily.

A yank small-block will also invaribly be cast-iron, with the weight penalties and handling/braking upsets that brings.

Nitrous oxide is the way to go.

Massive power hikes, very easy and cheap to install. My friend runs a mazda MX5 with a very modest 50 BHP kit. It cost in the region of £400. Bottle in the boot. two servos under the bonnet (it is a wet system, i.e. injects extra fuel as well ) and two nozzles into the rubber intake pipe. easypezzie.

The best bit is when you dont want to play you can just turn it off and run standard with no pumping losses and extra fuel costs.

I run a supercharger in my Range Rover and I make a reliable 390 odd horses out of 4.5l. I use a Sprintex kit that bolts straight on to the top of the engine with a modification to take the EFi. This adds 2.1" to the height of the engine and I think will fit under a P6 bonnet with minimal effort.
Remember that you will need to upgrade your brakes if you are putting more ponies under the front, because power makes you go faster!! :p
Not sure where you can get the kit anymore, I have not seen anyone advertising them in Australia for some time now, but I have seen a mob in a Classic magazine that sells a screw type blower for MGB etc. Last seen in Classic and Sportscar. Sorrry if this is not much help to those of you in the UK. :(
