Towbar Questions..

Hi All,
I've just been offered a 2nd hand Eriba Pan caravan in great nick for a good price. Its a little van, so won't be a problem for the old girl, (You can tow one of these with a classic mini apparently..

Anyway, I obviously need to fit a towbar to my P6. Just as well I've got a couple in the shed then..
This is what I have got..

Here's my question..
I assume the bracket in the middle bolts through the rear jacking block, and the ends bolt through the bumper brackets. Do I need anything else? (A ball hitch & electrics obviously, but I was wondering if any other metalwork was required..)

Cheers in advance!

I reckon there's a bit missing from that.
Yes the bolts extend through the jacking block, but they should then go into another section which spreads the load forwards through the boot floor.

Alternatively, another type goes either side of the jacking block instead of through it:

I was wondering about that. I suppose I could make the missing piece, unless someone's got one lurking about? :D

My bar has been on the car from birth and that centre strap that runs under the boot has never been .
May it be an a piece of engineering overkill ?
My tow bar arrangement is very stable without this strap and has towed some quite bizarre loads in its life .
I don't use P6 to tow anymore , but the bar has stopped a few car park bullies over the years .

That's interesting... I'm wondering if the extra bit is for heavy duty towing. .. I think I'm sorted now though thanks to Pilkie. ..

My daily P6 has exactly the part you have pictured without the underfloor length!
The main bar and brace to the jacking block!
Ive towed P6's on trailers, caravans and the heavy club trailer without issue!
As was mentioned,I think it was either engineering overkill,or possibly an aftermarket bar that had it!
Hope the item found sorts you out!
If its a very light caravan, and if it were me, I would just restore what you have in the pic,fit ball and electrics and a nice chrome flipper cover!!
You may have to reposition your rear overriders if you have them!

Cheers Pilkie. You're the second person to say they've got a towbar without the extension piece. The towbar I collected yesterday is a Dixon Bate heavy duty job. Its mahoosively heavy. It wouldn't sit nicely under the rear bumper, due to the really large gauge steels, so I'm going to do what you say & restore what I've got. I would only ever use the P6 to tow the little caravan, so it should be fine, especially in light of what you've handled with your setup..

I'm no expert on the OEM towbars, though I have two on the shelf, but I do know that there was a overrider & a non-overrider version, the difference I think being the width of the tow bar itself. Both of mine are the overrider versions, as overriders were standard equipment on the NADA cars.

Vern

I think that the straight bar versions (like the one in my photo above) make it difficult or impossible to fit over-riders. The bent one in the top photos should be fine.

Cheers guys. I haven't got over riders on the back of my car, so everything should be ok. Just started cleaning and painting the towbar so should be fitting it later this week. I like the idea of a chrome flipper cover.. 8)
