tip to get cheaper insurance. :)

I got the renewal quote for my P6 @ £136 fully comp. I did a search on uSwitch search and and i came up cheaper. But the odd thing is that it was with the same insurer. This is where it gets odd. So I phoned up the company and the very helpful and patient lady went throw the options on my current policy and the details I put in the net. And the odd bit, she says "you've specified two different cars sir". On the current policy it's a Rover P6 2000 sc and on the net you've said it's a 1973 Rover 2000sc. I had to explain they are the same make of car. She then explains that on the insurance system that they all use both cars are entered differently and so to them are different and so they both result in different quotes, Rover 2000sc being cheaper!!! I did make sure that the model was made between 1963 and 1973 and she did confirm that (was worried that she was looking at the SD1 2000 model).

So next time you do a renewal ask them if they list the 2000 / 2200 as a different car to the P6 and which is cheapest and if that is listed.

Very interesting. I've had similar experiences with other cars where the insurance company offers different quotes for different trim levels, etc.

I suppose we often forget that the car was never really described as a P6, just Rover 2000 etc... Maybe they just don't know what a P6 is ?

When I went to insure Lucky I made myself a list of the specialist classic car insurers and started with Footman. They quoted me £100.20 for the 3500 AND Baby Rover with unlimited mileage! Done! Tear up list for the rest and get £48 back on the existing insurance for Baby Rover. Result!

Chris, as you have, I've found Footman James to be very competitive with their price and policy spec too. Once you've rung them it's hardly worth phoning anyone else. They are offering unlimited mileage policies for classics with agreed valuations and pan European breakdown cover.

You will go a long way to beat Footman James.

Been with them for years, excellent premiums,
(Classic & Trade Policies) and never had a problem.

I'm with Lancaster. For me Footman James could not beat it. Although was within a few pounds. Problem with describing the car as a Rover 2000 is that they confuse it with the SD1 2000 sometimes. I had this problem with my first P6 I had in the early 90's. One insurance company could not give me a quote because they only know of the SD1 2000 and did not know what a P6 was, this was before a proper / standard computer system.

I know what you mean about them confusing models though.

My V70 is an older shape (box shaped) one but was registered 2 months after the new curvey shaped V70 came out in 2000 and if you get the wrong one it makes about £100 difference to the premium.

Every year my insurance company tries to put up my insurance. Having got some comparative quotes Ithen ring them.. After some chat they usually say "Ill speak to my manager.....in view of your length of time as avalued customer we'll give you a one off loyalty bonus". Hey presto renewal at near last years figure. :D Insurance companies make money by the majority of people not bothering to query the renewal quote. :?

They say it costs 5 times as much to get new customers as it does to keep existing ones .Why then do they offer all sorts of enticements to get you on board then put the premium up drastically next year ?

Because up until lately there were a high proportion of customers that just blindly renewed the insurance over and over again.

Even if year 1 was, say , £200 and next year £400 ?

I've had my P6 insured with Boncaster since 1994 and I don't think the premium has gone up over £15 in 14 years

My house and contents are with Rias for the same reason .

There is a similar thing with the MG ZT. Some insurers think that the MG ZT-T is a turbocharged car, whereas it is the tourer (estate) version.
