Timing?

I have a 1968 Rover P6b 3500 V8. I run it on super unleaded and add castrol valvemaster to it. What would be best to set the timing at, would it be as standard as in the manual or would it be better to retard it slightly? What are our opinions for the best sensible setting? Thanks.

Start it at TDC @ 600rpm and see if it pings under load. If not, advance it slightly and test again. When it starts to ping, retard it slightly. Mine used to ping at anything more than TDC, and even there it would ping too.

Just as Ron has said, I would not get hung up on this degree or that degree setting but rather what performs the best in exactly the manner Ron has described.

Exactly .
I now take my V8 to a LandRover factory trained old style dude . He set the timing with his ear to the sound of the motor. This is after I had set it as per the factory manual and couldn't get it to stop faffing about under different revs .
Manuals Phfff , who needs them when you can tap into old school knowledge for a few beers .
Im being silly now . The manual has got me into all sorts of shit and then out of it .

What is useful is once you've set the timing by ear, make a note of the setting so if you do any work you can always put it back again...
