Ticking brake pad.

They will start eventually though as you can hear them rattling in the calipers over bumpy ground. There must be wear in the calipers themselves, but I'm not replacing them just for that.
Colin at Kingsdown suggested a small amount of weld on the side of each of the pads, then grind down until they're a tight fit, which sounds promising.

They started ticking & I did get some weld put on the side of the pads. Just finished putting them in though I had to grind almost all the weld off as there was next to no room for it. Enough space to let the pads move though so hopefully the tiny bits of weld left will solve the problem. I haven't tested it yet so fingers crossed!

Done 200 odd miles so far & though you can hear a bit of rattling from the front over bumpy ground, the pads haven't started ticking yet.
So I'm hopeful.

Resurrecting a very old thread!

Sorry to ressurect such an old thread but had a similar problem after a complete brake rebuild.

My car got its brakes rebuilt professionally (  ) about 4 years ago but the car was little used only once or maybe twice for a spin around the block, so it only clocked up less than 1000KMs in that time however pretty much straight away from the rebuild it had a bad thunk thunk thunk noise as the pad was being picked up and dropped but didnt matter so much as was being used so infrequently. About a month ago I took the front passangers side wheel off and inspected all looked fine though the disc had a glazed look about it with many fine black black dots imprinted to the surface. I pulled the pins and lubed them reasembled and the problem went for about 50 or 60 Kms :x So last night pulled the pins removed the pads which were brand new (as you would expect) but very shiny!, deglazed them a took some sand paper to the disk as well to remove the surface glaze put some anti squeal paste on the pad backs and reasembled, problem cured.
A question I need to ask is there meant to be a shim behind the pad backing plate?

I am hoping what I did was a final cure.

Hello Graeme,

Yes indeed. There are two per caliper, one behind each pad backing plate, and they are distinct. So for both calipers you will have one pair of shims which are identical and another pair which are identical, and together the two pairs are distinct.

Ron.
