throttle linkage SU HIF6  2200 SC - Tricks to stop the play

Hello,

My throttle linkage to the single SU carb on my 2200 engine is slightly worn.
On slow cruising it is difficult to maintain a steady, small gas flow.
The plastic muffler between carb and gas pedal kaboudle is held by 2 split pins, but
together they provide at least 5 degrees play on the throttle linkage.

Have you any tricks how to remove that play, so that every tiny movement on the gas pedal is
instantly and directly received by the carb?
Also, where the gas pedal link penetrates the bulk head is a big hole,
normally covered by some rubber grommet.
Do you have a spare to trade?

Many thanks,
Bandito.
:)

That bad idle still continues!
I thought it is the dead vaccum unit. Now there is a proud pertronix
distributor with electronic ignition (yo!) and the old bag does
exactly the same as before. Ok, it runs a lot smoother, doesn't cut out
and is more eager, but still doesn't idle well. Certainly makes bolting through the narrow
streets of Devon a great adventure, but is not so nice, when you 're coming in for landing.

The caburettor is the last component, that has not been lathered in money (yet).

Can you please sell me your dead SU HIF6 AUD631?
Are there known problems with similar symptoms?

All the Best,
bandito.

It is getting worse:
I removed the suction pot and diddled with the needle, cleaned everything up a little...
She idles really well now, she revs well (standing still) but she DOES NOT PULL!

It feels as if some how the piston does not move up appropriate to the expected
mixture, or something else avoids the gas mix to be adequate.

What is it when idle is good , revs are good, but the car does not pull?
Cannot even get up the small incline from drive!

Happy Weekend!
:)

From the symptoms you describe it seems that it is something carb related. SU's are relatively simple but precision items, so just a good clean up with a careful assembly pays off in performance.

Are you sure that the piston moves freely under engine induction?
Sometimes when you screw down the suction chamber it binds somewhere with the piston. So if you unscrew and rotate the suction (bell) chamber will do the trick.

If not then perhaps you have a blocked jet or something (assuming it's a HIF 6).

Good luck...

Take the air filter off so you can see into the throat of the carb, then watch while snapping the throttle open, you should be able to see the piston lifting clearly.

Sounds like you have either disturbed something you shouldn't have, or not put something back in the right place. :D

hi,
i have been asked a lot for the rubber grommet that goes around throttle shaft through the bulkhead. i am at the present getting a mould made ready for a production run. should know more in the next two to three weeks. i am also getting the bearing for coupling shaft part no 553851 made. that is the bush that is pushed into the bracket attached to the steering arm idler for the accelerator rod. again i shall know more about this one later on this week when they have a better idea on what the price of the mould will be, currently around £400.00 to £500.00 for the mould to be made.

All is well that ends well.

The problem really never was the throttle linkage.

The old carburettor (now replaced with one overhauled by Gower and Lee (bless!))
suffered from "Hunting". The fuel mixture was set too low, so whenever
the engine caught up with what the gas pedal demanded, it sort of stalled,
and the gas foot was invited to give a little more. Ultimately the speed limit would be
exceeded and the foot had to come off again. So, the car never really
achieves a smooth, constant speed, but the gas foot constantly keeps hunting the
sweet point to chug along at 70 mph.

Thanks to all who helped!

.. cannot be expressed often enough on this lovely news board. :D

The Bruiser has a lot of play in the throttle. That white connector block with the 2 split-pins between the carbs is a bit suspect. Has anyone ever replaced the 2 shafts with one long one?

You don't really want to do it. The connector you describe is there for a purpose, remember that one end of the shaft is supported on a steady point (steering idler i guess on a RHD car) and the other on the carb(s) that are moving along with the engine (a little more so in the TCs :D ).

However, this connector is still available new, and if you replace it along with the other rubber bearings / bushes on the throttle linkage you will get rid of the play.
