The Infamous Series 2 Fusebox

ALL old cars, some more than others, need periodic electrical maintenance - from cleaning and greasing battery poles to R&R of all earths, and cleaning fuse contacts and their sockets.

Reading this whole thread with great interest, thanks to all for the detailed guidance and info! My heater blower has stopped working and on investigation, the fuse holder has started to melt like so may others. This must have happened pre my ownership, because a bodge job with a longer fuse has been tried to reach the now-melted contacts. The heater motor still works if you wiggle the fuse, but I clearly need to get a replacement.
As a short-term fix, I have attached a new, separate blade fuse to the fuse 23 and 24 points, cutting the existing wires and crimping new connections. However, heater motor is still not working. Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks as if fuses 21/22 and 23/24 are linked. Have I stuffed up by losing the power source?
Any advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Scotty

Wiring looms change slightly year by year, this is from mine -

The power comes in from the ignition switch to the top of 21/22 from a purple/brown wire.

Power for 23/24 comes from the top of 21/22 from the fuse blade which is joined at the back to 23/24. The way it's set up, the power can come in on the left blade of 21/22 and be transferred to the right blade by the actual fuse top, then over to the left blade of 23/24. If you remove fuse 21/23, you lose power to 23/24. Only one of the brass fuse clips has power to it.

There should be 2 purple/brown wires coming from the top of 23/24, but these are not incoming power, one goes to fuse 3/4 to power the heated rear screen and the other is a pick up for the radio.

Which wire have you cut?

Again - this is from my wiring diagram, but yours should be close to it

Thanks Richard. That makes sense now. I’ve cut the two purple/ brown wires going into 23/24, but have lost the power bridge from 21/22. Back to the drawing board!
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers

What quattro said is very important and relevant. You can avoid this problem by joining each pair of fuse clips with a home made clip - 1/32" piano wire (hobby shop) bent into a U shape with needle nose pliers. One of our suppliers actually offers such clips.
