That'll be the source of the damp mouldy smell ... - Can anyone recommend a welder?

Further to my last post about the browncaps in the footwell :( I investigated a little bit more. The passenger side carpet was a little bit damp, the underlay a little more so. Furious carpet-lifting showed exactly what I dreaded - a small patch of daylight near the floor/inner sill area. That'll be why the footwell was damp, then. Bummocks.

Working on the usual 10% rule (I only found 10% of the rot, that is) I'm assuming that it's a lot worse, as usual. As I don't have the time to weld it myself (nor the space for working on the car as the garage is full of motorbikes), I was wondering if someone could recommend a old-fashioned[1] bodyman/welder who can repair this properly? I don't want to have a patch stuck on top of the rot here...

Turnpike Motors sprang to mind immediately but they're moving next week and they reckon it'll take until April/May to reopen, whereever they move to. Ideally I'd want that fixed in the next couple of weeks as I was planning to sort out the interior by then.

So, anyone with recommendation for an someone who can sort this out in North London/Herts/Beds?

[1] I.E. proper craftsman, not a panel changer.
[2] *Every* buyers guide I checked pointed out that you really, really need to check the condition of the base unit. Which I did, but probably not well enough...

I usually find that the holes in the floor a caused by water leaking from above, rather than coming up from underneath.

Water rarely finds its way up through a hole in the floor unless you drive on wet roads / in the rain, certainly not if just parked.

I have nearly all the rubber bungs removed from the floor in my convertible, and the carpets never get wet, but then its parked on the drive all the time !. In fact the holes often help to allow water from the roof leaks to run out rather than standing in the footwells.

Make sure the window / door / windscreen seals are all ok, otherwise it will probably still get damp even after its been welded.

Try Ely Motor Service. I think they are in Cambs., and are P4,5 & 6 specialists. Dont know their number off hand, but they advertise in Practical Classics mag. as well as others. :)

PeterB76 - I was aware of their existence, but had hoped I could find someone a bit more local. AFAIK they are in Ely and I'm looking at about 1.5 hours to get there and sod knows how long back on the train...

Ah well, I'll do a bit more digging around the car this weekend and see how many holes I can find...

I too live in North London, and there appears to be a real shortage of P6 specialists in the area. Cliff at Turnpike was the best I knew of, from the brief dealings I had with him. Paul Harris based in Wembly area is one contact I do have, but I have not used his services yet, although I did visit his workshop and found him surrounded in P6s which was a good sign. He has a welder who whe works with, so could be worth a try. Paul specialises in mechanical side. His mobile is 07967 681 941. If you do make contact, please let me know how you get on, or if you know of any other P6 specialists nearer to Camden / Kentish Town (my area), I would be pleased to hear.

My car was done up very well from at TS Motors in Watford. The extensive welding done looked excellent to me and at a reasonable price. Contact name; Chris George 01923 229228

I called Turnpike Rover and got automaticaly redirected to his son who has taken over the business. He used to be elsewhere as Brooklands motorcraft. He is in London Colney and will do some mech and body stuff for me soon

There is also suposed to be a P6 person in St Albans. Possibly called Buchanans? from memory.

In Shenley Lane.

Their new details are on the old Turnpike Rover website. The chap in charge is Graham, Cliff's son.
