Temp gauge problems

Hi guys, need some help with getting my temp gauge to work. its never worked since Ive had the car and with summer here its probably one of the most important dials so need to get it working really!

I have 2 wires at the sensor end on the engine, but only 1 spade on the actual sensor. I plug the wire with the space connector onto the sensor, then earth the other wire and the guage just goes up right into the red even on a stone cold engine. If you disconnect the earth wire, the gauge dosnt work at all. My car has a 3.9 Rover V8 fitted and thought I'd try a new P6 temp sensor thinking that might be a reason why its not working right, but that is doing exactly the same.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get it working properly? The other gauges work fine apart from the voltage one (and speedo but thats due to the speed cable).

Cheers.
Nick.

There is only one connection needed for the sensor. Try connecting the "earth" wire to the sensor and ignoring the other. It might help if you gave the colour codes on the two wires.

Hi, I agree, the "earth" wire is the one for the sensor and when you earth it the gauge
goes up which proves the gauge is working. The other one is probably for the choke light
switch, as you have a 3.9 it won't have the switch. You may have to change the sensor
to get the gauge to read correctly, they can be difficult to obtain. There is a thread on
here some where about it.

Hope the pic makes more sense, the earth wire is green, and the other one (yellow with black heat shrink on) is the one with the spade connector on it. Just assumed that was the one that goes on the sensor as the connector fits thats all but will try them the other way round.

I have changed the sensor for a new P6 V8 one and it was doing the same

Hi, yes as stated, green and blue onto the temp sender, the black sleeved white and
blue can't be used on your engine as no thermo switch so tape it up or you may get
the choke light flashing at odd times. The colours may not be immediately obvious
due to age and heat.

Hi , the other thread Colin referred to was mine , this should be it , viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17714&start=0
Doesn't matter what engine you have , the parts that need to work together are the gauge and the sender . When it's sorted it'll measure the temp of your tea as long as it's earthed to the motor . Go to your local landie dealer and order one for a classic range rover

Either that or earth it and the light will come on all the time the choke is out, which will at least be a warning, as good as pretty much every other car had, (if they were lucky), and will be half-working as far as Rover is concerned.
