Does anyone have the definitive answer regarding how the exemption system works ? I may of asked this before but i'm still not sure , not as to if , but when my P6 becomes exempt . I have just received the reminder to tax it at the end of this month , and am wondering weather to tax it for 6 or twelve months . It was first registered on 1st May 1974 , ( so i'm assuming it was built by then ! Although i don't know the actual build date ) Assuming it was some time between Jan 74 and the registration date When does it become tax exempt , from next January , or next April ?
Anyone ? :D
Ps , plus what do i do when the time comes to register it as such ?

Firstly it's calculated on build date, not registration date, and if your car was built in 1974, then it becomes 40 years old sometime during 2014, and it becomes tax exempt in the April of the following year. At the moment they become tax exempt in the April of the year following the year they celebrate their 40th birthday. Life begins at 40.....

AFAIK you take the V5 to the Post Office when you tax it having filled in the change of taxation class section. They then send the V5 to DVLA for you. I'm not sure how it works online.

O.K , so to be sure to be sure , i have to tax her to next April , so i just as well save the 20 quid by taxing for 12 months , then claim it back .

As I understand it, the rolling 40 year exemption advances on the 1st April each year for cars 40 years old on 1st Jan of that year.

On 1st April 2014 cars built before 1st Jan 1974 become tax exempt.

On 1st April 2015 cars built before 1st Jan 1975 become tax exempt

etc etc.

My car was built in 1974 so becomes exempt on 1st April 2015 as I think yours does Stina.

I think you have to change the registration class to HISTORIC on the V5 as Harvey says. Normally a NIL tax disc would be issued but I think the displaying of tax discs is being abolished later this year so it will probably just be recorded as taxed electronically.

Thanks Pat , That's a pretty definitive answer . It's pretty much as i thought . I wonder if old tax discs will become collectable when they stop issuing them !

Mine was built 24th April 1974 and registered on the 17th May 1974 so only about 20 - 25 days between build date and registration would be normal at that time I would think ? I just went for 6 months tax this year and will hopefully be ready to go at the beginning of April next year.
Does any one know how early you can start the process to get your V5 changed to historic. Is it a couple of weeks before or do you have to wait till 01st of April? And do they issue your historic tax straight away from post office or do you have to wait on some sort of confirmation from DVLA? Nothing simple with government offices usually ! :?

The 1973 oil crisis had just ended; oil had quadrupled in price also inflation was rampant, nearly 20%! I would have thought the 4 pots would have been much more popular than the V8's at this time.

You can only change the taxation class when you tax it, not before, even if you're taxing it months after it becomes exempt. The two have to be done at the same time. AFAIK you can do it all at the PO now the DVLA local offices have all been closed, but you have to take the V5 with you with the taxation class change filled in and that's kept by the PO and sent off to DVLA.
